Many common problems that occur with your air conditioner can be quickly fixed without the help of a professional repairman. Even if you don't know a lot about how heating and cooling systems work, you can fix AC problems on your own by following simple tutorials online or by talking to a repairman over the phone. Many times, the air conditioner will stop working because it has not been properly cleaned or maintained. You should always call a professional to give your cooling system an annual checkup before warm weather hits. Have your system thoroughly cleaned and prepped before summer's heat wave is on top of you. This can prevent a lot of common problems.
If your air conditioner does stop working in the middle of summer, don't panic! It is likely a small issue that will be easy to repair. Before you call a professional and spend hundreds of dollars to have your system assessed, try to fix AC problems yourself by eliminating common issues. The most frequent reason that an air conditioner stops working properly is related to the evaporator. Most of the time, you can do a quick cleaning procedure on the evaporator and your air conditioner will be working properly immediately.
Your air conditioner's evaporator is probably located right above the furnace. It might not be easy to access, but with a little work, you can probably get to it and clean it out on your own. Check to see where the evaporator is located. If it has insulation wrapped in foil at the front, you should be safe to clean it on your own. However, if the evaporator is sealed shut in a metal box, don't try to open it or you could cause major damage. If you have a sealed evaporator, you will have to call a professional for help to fix AC problems.
If you were able to access the evaporator, carefully remove the insulation wrapped in foil that sits at the front of the plenum. It is usually secured with tape, which you can carefully remove and later replace. After you take off the insulation, you will see an access plate. This is secured with several screws so grab your screwdriver and remove them. Next, carefully lift off the access plate. Use a stiff brush to clean the underside of your evaporator. If you can't reach all the way to the back portion, slide the evaporator out a little or use a hand mirror to give you a better view. Be careful not to bend any piped connected to the evaporator.
Next, clean out the tray beneath the evaporator and pour in a tablespoon on bleach to prevent mold and fungus from growing in your system. If your weep hole is clogged, try to open it with a piece of wire so your evaporator can properly drain. Then carefully put the unit in place; screw the plate back on, and replace the insulation on top. This process should effectively fix AC problems related to the evaporator.
