When your air conditioner stops working, it's easy to assume the worst and start combing the yellow pages for A/C repair technicians. Before you spend hundreds of dollars on a professional assessment, take a few minutes to evaluate your system on your own. This can not only save you money, but it can also help you to better understand how your air conditioning system works so you can properly maintain it in the future. Most air conditioning repair projects can be done on your own with a few simple steps. Sometimes the solution is as simple as cleaning your condenser unit.
According to experienced A/C repair professionals, most of the time air conditioners malfunction because the condenser hasn't been properly maintained and cleaned. If you haven't paid for a checkup or cleaned your condenser in the past year that should be your first step when you start having problems with the unit. You will find the condenser unit outside. It is usually near the back of the house and looks like a large box on a concrete slab. Because the condenser is outside, it usually accumulates a lot of debris from grass, leaves, dust, and dirt. Cleaning the condenser can help it to return to normal function so your home will be cool again.
To begin this simple A/C repair project, you need to cut down any vines or weeds that have grown up around the condenser. Any kind of plant or debris that is covering the unit can restrict airflow. Next, you will need to clean the condenser internally by flushing out the coil. You can buy commercial cleaners for air conditioning coils at any refrigerator supply store or home improvement retail outlet. The cleaner will come with detailed instructions on how to properly flush the coil.
Next, use a soft bristled brush to carefully clean the condenser's fins. If dirt has accumulated underneath the grill of the unit, unscrew it so you can reach it. Never clean the fins of a condenser with a water hose. The water will only turn any dirt lodged in the fins into a thick mess of mud, further clogging the fins and making it even more difficult to clean. The fins are typically made of aluminum and they are lightweight and easy to damage. Be careful not to bend them while brushing away the dirt. You can buy a special comb for cleaning condenser fins at the home improvement store if you don't have a soft brush on hand.
Finally, check to be sure the condenser is resting on a level concrete pad. Overtime, the concrete can settle, leaving the condenser uneven which will make it malfunction. You can fix this problem by forcing some small rocks under the concrete until it is completely level again. Cleaning your condenser each year will prevent more complicated A/C repair problems from occurring.
