So you have decided to install your own flooring? You are definitely a brave person to tackle this kind of project on your own, but with a little guidance from professionals you can successfully complete the floor install process. Here are a few important things to keep in mind while installing your own home flooring.
First, make sure you choose quality hardwood flooring that will be durable and strong over many years. Look for engineered hardwoods that are at least 1/2 inch thick if you will be placing the flooring over heated subfloors. The best wood choices for this scenario are Walnut, Ash, Hickory, and Oak. You can choose either floating installation or adhered installation when you apply the flooring. Do not use nailing or stapling methods if you have heated radiant subflooring. If you use a method that is not approved for your particular engineered hardwoods, it could void your warranty and cause major problems in how long the floors last.
Anytime you do a floor install project, be aware that it is normal to see tiny gaps between the planks, especially over time. This is common in homes that have heated subfloors. You can minimize the amount of gapping by controlling the humidity in your home and keeping the temperature between 60 and 80 degrees. For the first four weeks after your floor is installed, keep your heating system set for 64 to 72 degrees. This will allow the flooring to set properly without gapping. It will also give your floor adequate time and temperatures to properly dry if you used adhesive.
Before you do a floor install project in homes with water-powered radiant heaters, you will need to have a repairman check your heating system and test the pressure. Set the heater to no lower than 64 degrees around 4-5 days before your flooring is delivered to give your subfloor time to hit the correct temperature for installation. Never begin installing the flooring until the heating system has been at a minimum of 64 degrees for at least 4 days.
You should also use a moisture meter to check the subflooring. Your meter should show that moisture is less than 14% if you want to safely carry out your floor install project. If your subflooring is made from concrete, you can use a concrete moisture meter and they should measure as dry. Your subfloor pH level should fall in the normal range of 6-9 using a 14-point scale. Make sure your subflooring is properly prepared before you start installing new wood floors.
By taking these precautions, you can insure that your floor install project is successful. You can enjoy beautiful new hardwood floors in your home and save thousands of dollars on installation costs by doing the work yourself.
