If you ask a contractor to outline the difference between certain building materials, they can. And if they cant you may want to find a different contractor. There are as many building materials as there are people. For the sake of narrowing the argument for a moment lets look at one material that has recently begun to be used more prominently. Silestone is being used in many ways but most commonly it is found in countertops. Silestone countertops are beautiful and virtually maintenance free. The primary competitor to silestone is granite. Lets examine some of the differences.
Silestone is a synthetic material. That means it was designed in a laboratory. Silestone is a combination of resins and crushed stones. Since there are real stones within the combination, there is a wide variety of colors that a person can have in their countertops. This is especially important for those individuals who are wavering back and forth between granite and silestone. Silestone countertops actually offer more color combinations than granite. This means that for a smaller amount of money you could have a brighter, more alluring kitchen countertop.
Another huge difference between granite countertops and silestone countertops is maintenance. Because granite is a natural stone it is porous. While these holes are not visible to the naked eye, they are there nonetheless. Because of these small pores granite requires a sealer to be placed every twelve to eighteen months. This simply is not the case with silestone. Because silestone is synthetic there are no pores. That means there will be no sealer needed and there will be no deterioration based on color loss or bacteria. Quite simply put, silestone is a superior material when compared to granite.
While there is a myriad of colors available in both granite and silestone, the truth is that only granite can offer color combinations. Silestone countertops are solid in color. While beautiful it is not the same as granite. For some people this is not an issue yet for others it is a point of no return. What should a person do? Perhaps you would like the best of both worlds. It is possible to combine the beauty of both by using borders and such. However, when researching your next countertop be sure to evaluate every available material. Silestone, as stated above, is made with crushed rocks and resin. Those rocks are quartz rocks. That makes silestone one of the more durable products you could choose.
As you can see there are benefits to both sides of this argument. Granite offers color combos while silestone offers ease of use and little to no maintenance. The prices are comparable as well as the functionality. It simply boils down to what you prefer. Take the time to examine both and you will not be disappointed.
