Cooling System Maintenance Steps for Outdoor Compressor

It takes care of you during the days when the sun is a real scorcher so you should also take care of your cooling systems at home. It is only fair and it will also save you on repairs if you do some maintenance work in your home's cooling system. Furthermore, doing a system cleanup of your air conditioning system will ensure that the system will keep on working at top-notch level.

If you will do a cooling systems maintenance check, here are the materials that you will need. Spray gun or if none, a garden hose, vacuum, wrench, socket driver, Phillips and flat head screwdrivers and a fin comb. A fin comb is a simple tool utilized when there is a need to straighten the fins of a condenser. You can get one of these in your local hardware store.

Once you have all your materials ready, start by turning off the cooling system's power. Check your user manual to see the details on how to shut off your entire cooling system. Then allow 10-15 minutes to pass before going to the next step. This time allowance will be enough to disperse any stored energy.

Next, open the cooling system unit by removing the screws securing the protective grilles and panels. Use a Phillips head or a flat blade as necessary. Once all screws are securely removed, pull the grill and panel away. To make returning the crews easy, position the laying down of your screws in such a manner that they are placed like they are used in the unit. Do note to also be careful in pulling the grille and panel as they may be connected to the fan. On the motor oil ports, locate these through your user manual, give 2-5 drops of household oil.

The third step will be to work on the condenser coils. Using your vacuum's brush attachment, clean the outer part of the coil fins. Do this with utmost care so that you do not bend the coil fins. Once the outer part is done, attend to the inside of the condenser by spraying it with water from the inside to the outside, avoiding the motor or any wires nearby. You can also use an air conditioner cleaner here, but if you do, protect yourself with gloves and goggles. Once done, check the bottom part of the compressor and vacuum any debris accumulated.

Fourthly, with the help of a fin comb, straighten out the bent fins in the compressor. This is done by aligning the teeth of the fin comb to the spaced in the coil. Once aligned, run the comb downwards until the fins are straightened. Reposition the grille and panels back. Make sure you wait 3-4 hours before you restart your air conditioner again.

Doing this maintenance work for cooling systems is mandatory to lengthen the life of an air conditioning system.
