Choosing the right athletic shoes is imperative to a runner. There are a lot of things going on when people run. Some factors that affect the way people run can be very helpful when choosing the type of running shoes to wear. Choosing the right pair can make or break a runner's foot. It spells the difference between enjoying a morning jog and a serious foot injury.
Kicking Things Off
Before running off to the nearest specialty store, there are a few preliminaries that everyone should determine when buying athletic shoes. First off, be sure to wear the same socks used for running. Next, remember to bring the old pair of running shoes since the personnel at the specialty store can figure out the right type of shoe depending on the marks on the old pair of running shoes.
The next step is to figure out the feet's pronation. Pronation refers to the outward turning motion of a runner's foot starting at the ankle either when walking or running. Notice that some people have the tendency to put more weight on the inner border of their feet when they run or walk. This is the opposite of supination, where people tend to walk using the outer border of their feet.
To test if one has a pronation, supination (or under pronation), or over pronation grab a piece of paper and lay it flat on the floor. Dip one bare foot in water and step on the piece of paper on the floor. Mark the outline of the foot's imprint on the paper. This detail will help people figure out the right athletic shoes for a runner's feet.
If the outline is straight out flat on the paper then the shoe owner has flat feet and is an over pronater. If there is a moderate arch to the foot imprint then the runner has a neutral pronation. On the other hand, an even higher arch on the imprint indicates a supination. Be sure to mention this fact to the specialty store personnel who will assist in picking the right shoes.
Now that these particulars have been dealt with it's time to go to the sports store or specialty store. Be sure to visit either after a run or later in the day. Be sure to wear the same running socks at the store to ensure the utmost comfort when trying on different pairs of shoes.
A good salesperson will ask to see the old shoes to figure out one's pronation type and other needs that a runner might have. Remember to choose the size of the athletic shoes using one's larger foot. The salesperson might need to know the foot pronation, usual mileage that one runs, and the usual terrain that one goes through.
Try on different shoe sizes and designs suggested by the salesperson and walk around the store to test for comfort. Be sure to wiggle the toes, if people can't wiggle their toes in their new pair of shoes then it means that the shoebox is too small. Here's another important test for the toes: press the thumb on top of the shoe above longest toe. The thumb should fit between the space in between the end of the shoe and the end of the longest toe.
Reminders
Remember that over pronaters will require a straight sole and motion control shoes. On the other hand, an under pronater will need a curved sole and extra cushioning. Neutral pronaters need a semi curved sole plus shoes with added stability. These are essential details when purchasing athletic shoes.
