It could be quite difficult to select from the various types of available athletic shoes in the market. There are so many features that differentiate one from the other, including but not limited to aspects of design, materials used, and net weight. Different shoes also cater to different purposes. There are shoes too that are specific for particular sports, suited to their individual requirements. Their design has been especially developed to protect particular foot and ankle areas which receive the most stress in a specific athletic sport. There are several categories into which athletic shoes are classified. These include training, running, hiking, walking, exercise walking, and jogging. They are also classified according to the categories discussed below.
Shoes for aerobic activities. These shoes are adapted to activities such as exercise walking, running, walking, training, jogging, and hiking. The ideal shoes for these activities should have a soft upper part for comfort, plus a smooth tread and adequate shock absorbing function. Its sole must also have a rocking effect, which is conducive to a natural and effortless rolling of the feet during walking. Good shoes for jogging must be cushioned, flexible, have good control, and be stable at the area of the heel. It must also be light and have efficient traction. Look for shoes that have a design compatible to the shape of one's foot, be it high arched, flat, narrow, wide, or what have you.
Shoes for sports in courts. These shoes are well adapted to sports such as volleyball, basketball and tennis. Such sports compel the body to move in backward, forward and sideward directions. Thus, these activities take a heavy toll on the shoes. The shoes should thus be particularly strong and durable. Soles are also important, especially their hold on the court surface.
Shoes in the field. Field sports such as baseball, football and soccer require studded, spiked and cleated shoes. The studs and spikes can be detachable or replaceable, and usually come in many variations, depending on the sport they are designed for. These studs, spikes are often installed on soles made of nylon. The cleats on the area of the heel, however, can cause considerable stress. To cope with the impact on shocks and stresses, gel pads may be used.
Shoes for the winter games. Shoes used for ice hockey, figure skating, and cross-country and alpine skiing require special designs. These shoes are usually made to provide additional support for the ankles in order to have a snug fit.
Shoes for track and field. Differing training styles, foot types and patterns of gait, not to mention other variations in each individual need different shoe models and designs. Coaches, shoe experts, sports physicians, and sports specialists can usually point to good shoes for individual needs.
Other sports also require special athletic shoes, such as cycling, golf and dancing. The appropriate design will depend on the particular sport. For cycling, a good snugly fit is essential, and a comfortable design is needed on the greens. For dancing, these are dependent on the particular dance routine. Ballet shoes are also a category of its own.
Shoes for outdoor activities. Outdoor recreation such as fly-fishing, kayaking, hunting, and the like will also require a design suited for the wild outdoors. Needed qualities include enough warmth, support and proper tread.
