In March 2010, thirteen recalls were made on children's clothing because of the presence of strangulation dangers. This was narrated by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). It is thus important to know the laws on children's clothing before buying your kids outfits.
Before they are sold out in the market, the pajamas of children need to pass a flammability test to assess if the cloth is resistant to flames and if the fire would die down if such clothes catch on fire. If the pajama is not resistant to flames, a label must be placed on it stating this. They must also be tight-fitting, as it is believed that garments that are loose are more prone to catch fire. Such a standard on pajamas is essential according to the CPSC and it would help safeguard unsupervised kids from the risk of getting injured during a fire. This regulation is applicable to cloths for babies nine months old and kids size 14.
It is also necessary to test for lead or any metallic embellishments attached to children's clothing such as zippers, snaps and buttons. The CPSC said the tolerable amount of lead would depend on the component, clothing and even the fabric as there may be dyes, coatings, thermal transfers and thermal prints that have lead.
The CPSC is also worried about upper outerwear like sweatshirts and jackets that have long drawstrings and hoods as these may cause strangulation. If there are attachments or knots on the strings' ends, these may connect with the lower drawstrings. These may prove dangerous just in case a car hits a child and drags him or her because of such drawstrings. It is therefore suggested by the CPSC that manufacturers use snaps instead of upper drawstrings on kids' clothes.
The drawstrings at the waist level should be sewn at the center and must not be more than three inches in length . This is to prevent any of the ends getting pulled on one side and then cause snagging. Such drawstrings may get caught on playground equipment such as slides and school bus railings near the doorway.
Another enacted law states that the tracking labels on children's clothing must be permanent. The label must have the production date, the private labeler, manufacturer, location, batch number or other information for identification. This law is the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act, particularly Section 103. It also states that products for kids 12 years old or below must comply with a safety standard before it can indicate that standard in its label, packaging or advertisement
Kids love riding bicycles therefore there are laws regarding bicycle helmets. These helmets should pass tests checking if they fall off and if they protect the head during a crash or fall. Kids in the age range of 1 to 5 years old should have helmets that give more head coverage. Helmets should also have straps that will not break or elongate in an accident. They should also give peripheral vision of 105% and they must have labels indicating they follow the regulation. This is according to the 1994 Act on Child Safety Protection.
It is in the child's best interest that such laws on children's clothing were crafted and enacted.
