Because kids tend to grow up so fast, children's clothing sometime do not get used for a long time. It would be fortunate if there were more than one child in the family because the older sibling's clothes can be used by the younger ones. It is not practical to pile up clothes in the closet as they will eat up space. Here are tips to organize and save children's clothing properly so they can be used by the younger ones when they grow older.
There are four letters to bear in mind in organizing and saving children's clothing. They are SLFS that mean separate, label, file and store. You need to separate clothes by size, gender and season. For example, if you need to stow away summer clothes, organize them according to gender and size. If there are no size tags, check the clothes and find the ones that are the same in terms of width and length.
Keep the clothes in clean storage boxes . Make sure to label these boxes by marking them clearly outside. On a large sheet of paper, write down the gender, season and size utilizing a thick marker. For instance, you can say Girls, winter/ size 7-9 or Boys, spring/Size 6-7. These details are important so that you could easily recognize the clothes that you need when looking for them. It is acceptable to end up with plenty of boxes as long as these are organized. Stick the paper on the boxes using scotch tape or masking tape.
Make sure to place the boxes in a dry and cool area so that they will not spoil due to moisture. If you are using plastic bins, you can make three or four tiny holes in the top or sides so that they will be ventilated. If you are using cardboard boxes, place them on top of a pallet or shelf. Never put them in the basement or the floor as flooding may happen.
Filing is necessary in the storage of children's clothing especially if you have plenty of kids. You can mark the boxes with a number or a code. Get index cards and have one for each box. Make sure that the number or code you placed on the box is the same as that of its corresponding card. On every card, list down each piece of clothing found inside its corresponding box. When you label and file your boxes, it would not be difficult to look for that party dress your elder daughter wore before.
If your 10-year old son is followed by a 2-year old toddler, it would be more realistic to pass the elder son's clothes to someone else who is close to his age instead of waiting for 8 years for the younger one to grow. It is not practical to save many clothes and it would be simpler to save only what your closet space can accommodate. You can give to charity or your neighbor clothes that do not fit your children anymore.
These are the tips in organizing and filing children's clothing so as to preserve them for a long time if needed.
