The game of chess and its chess set has gone through some very interesting developments through the years. Many chess enthusiasts cherish the times when they spent hours upon hours of game play on a wooden set that carried with it that elegant look and intrinsic appeal that people usually get from well crafted pieces of wood carving.
Times change, however, and so does the appearance of our modern day chess pieces. The even elegant wooden board is still around to be appreciated by the next generation but others have come to present similarly interesting alternatives. Everyone can say that the game of chess has traveled from somewhat antiquated times using precious wooden items all the way to the digital age where virtual chess games are played.
A Look at the Changes and What Stayed the Same
The changes that we can find from the once carved works of art vary from small cosmetic modifications to themed representations of today's trends. These fanciful changes often reflect the current status of today's society and the popular culture of the time. Star Trek sets in 70's fashion celebrate the fashion statements of those times while a Simpsons themed chess set will reflect what's currently popular amongst the people in their own era.
Note that many of these themed sets are not essentially designed for actual play. They can be seen as collector's items if they are rare pieces or more decorative pieces for many folks. The chess enthusiast Man Ray even created his own artistic set that everyone can see in New York's Museum of Modern Art.
The popular design of the chess pieces that many enthusiasts have become accustomed to today were the product of the genius of Nathaniel Cook who named his set of chess pieces after Howard Staunton, an English chess enthusiast who lived in the 19th century. The first of Cook's Staunton chess pieces proliferated in 1849 and they have continued to this day.
Regardless of either modern or earlier design, the chess set has its pieces crafted as if they were figurines. The height of these so called chess men is usually greater than their width. Competition grade chess pieces make use of the king as a gauge since the other chess men usually follow suit in proportion to the king's dimensions.
A standard sized king, according to competition rules, should be between 3 3/8 inches and 4 1/2 inches tall. Note that most chess players prefer to use 3 3/4" up to 4". The diameter of the king's base is usually set at 40% to 50% of its actual height. The squares of the chess board should also be in proportion to the dimensions of the king.
The length of a square on the chessboard should be about 1.25 times to 1.3 times the actual diameter of the king's base. Thus, many chess boards have squares that have sides that are 2 to 2.5 inches in length. However, many chess players prefer the length of the sides of the squares to be at 2.25 inches.
It is interesting that such standards have been kept through the times. Yet we now have a pocket edition chess set and chess pieces that are suitable for travel. The prevalence of computer technology has also launched the game into the digital age. Nevertheless, Staunton pieces are still depicted in the images seen on the computer screen. The chess set may have inculcated several changes but it's a bit refreshing to know that certain traditions in chess live on in the modern era.
