If you have plans of buying a marble chess set, always consider the size of the board, the color and type of marble, and design of the pieces. For hundreds of years, marble was used to make chess pieces and boards because they are more durable, can be easily maintained and cared for, and can be used as a dcor in any part of the house.
Marble sets have two types and they are the Staunton and the classic types. The Staunton type is made of stone and has exaggerated features. The classic look remains popular and has been played for many years. It is usually from Italy where the marble comes from to use in this type of set. Some sets also have Venetian marbles. The sets made of veined marble or white marble are very appealing and unique and they provide beauty in its surroundings.
A marble chess set has three different board sizes. Some are 16-inches, some are 18-inches while others are 20-inches in size. When the board is small, the pieces should also be small so as to accommodate them inside each square. Boards that are 16-inches in size have pieces that are 3 1/8 inches in height. As for an 18-inch board, the tallest piece which is the king has a length of 4 inches.
There are different and unique color combinations of a chess set and they come in green and brown, red and black, red and coral, black and white, green and white, and others. Depending on where the marble came from , the colors are either speckled or veined. They are carved by hand making them look more interesting. A set would usually have a storage case while the board and pieces have bottoms that are felted so that they will not be scratched or cause scratches to the board. The board matches the pieces and they have a shiny polished surface. The pieces are very easy to hold and smooth. The entire set would weigh from 16 to 18 pounds. A marble set would not easily fall off from the table because of its weight and felting underneath the board.
The appearance of the pieces will identify whether the set is a Staunton or a classic marble chess set. The Staunton set was popularized by Howard Staunton who was considered a chess master in England during the 1800s. The design of the marble of this set has a rustic look. The classic marble set has pieces that are non-embellished and smooth.
Marble produces a chemical reaction or discoloration when anything acidic touches it such as juice, lemonade or pasta sauce. To avoid this, it is better not to spill anything on it nor should an acidic cleanser be used to clean it with. To clean the pieces, warm water on a soft washcloth will do. Never clean them with soap.
If you are a chess fan and you want to place a set in your living room for purposes of playing and adding style in the room, buy a marble chess set. You can get one online or from any brick-and-mortar shop that sells decors and sporting goods/games.
