What are the differences between the Old and the New Testament? Both the New and the Old Testaments are parts of the Bible, each of them containing several books written by several authors. Still, there are several distinct characteristics that separate them from one another, and these differences are more than just the people who authored the books.
What the two testaments narrate and relate to people is very different from one another. The Old Testament relates the story of how God created man, and how man has communicated with and have had their relationship with their creator. On the other hand, the latter books of the New Testament relate the life and death of Jesus Christ, in all his glory and suffering, from the time that he is, to the time that he was, to the time that he will be.
As already mentioned, the authors of the book from both the testaments were different. Though all of them have been servants of God, the Old Testament was made by people who have had direct communication with Him, as it was the time when God still supposedly talked to humans through prophets and some kings. David, Solomon, Zechariah, Jonah and Job are some of the most known authors of books from the Old Testament.
On the contrary, the books from the New Testament were written by the apostles of Christ. Luke, Matthew, John and Paul authored some of the final books. These books concentrate on the teachings of God through Jesus Christ. The apostles related who Jesus Christ was and what his role will be after his death and resurrection. It also contains the Book of Apocalypse, which relates about the end of the world, when good will battle the evil the final time.
Of course, the places where events happened in both the New and the Old Testaments were different too. In the first books, most events happened supposedly in the Middle East. In the latter books where Jesus Christ was of chief importance, most events happened around Israel and Jerusalem where he was born.
The principal difference lies, however, in the function of the two testaments. The collection of the first books in the Bible was made to form the foundation of the faith that many Christians now have. It has related how God created the world and then created man, and it continued on to related how man has finally realized what he was created for. Though some of the books might have mentioned and foretold the end of the world and who would save people from it, most of them were just prophecies and historical facts.
The New Testament focuses not only on the life of Jesus Christ, but also on what he has taught the apostles and the people of the time, which the apostles would continue to teach until they die. It would relate how Christianity and the church of Christ were born. But more importantly, it would teach just how Jesus Christ is a perfect example of everything that is good.
