While it used to be that choosing cooking ovens before was quite easy, things have changed. The thing is people now have more choices to consider when selecting an oven. Well, one may ask, shouldn't more choices be equal to an easier time? Maybe, at least for those who have a clear set of features of qualities that they are looking for in an oven. But for some (actually, for most) who have this tendency to go to the store and make shopping for an oven be similar to picking a new pair of shoes, the selection process might prove harder. This is because the choices for ovens these days have quite distinct features from one another, making the selection process that challenging.
So, while people in the 1970s may just go to the appliance store and get the one single choice for an oven, an upright model in white enamel, these days, the process has gone complicated with more options - analog or digital timer? Gas or electric? Wall or freestanding oven? Those questions are actually just the tip of the cooking oven iceberg.
While the battle for popularity in the oven kingdom is still between the more traditional freestanding oven and the relatively newer wall or cooktop oven, both now have additional options and features, from multiple ovens , dual systems that accommodate both gas and electric, burners for fish, woks and separate grills for barbecue and Japanese cuisine. Thus, there are more factors for a current shopper of ovens to think about compared to before.
That being said, it is good to first clear the air by clarifying the basic concepts regarding cooking ovens. There is the freestanding oven, or the oven that has been in kitchens for decades. It is composed of an oven which is in the lower portion of the unit and hotplates on the top of the range. Freestanding ovens are now available in electric, gas or dual-fuel varieties. There is no need to install it in a cupboard or cabinet, as it stands by itself. Put it (not too close) against the wall, in between two cabinets, or in any available space that it can fit in, and you're good to go. That makes them very convenient in terms of installation.
The other variety is the wall oven which is installed by mounting it in a cabinet with the height of the average waist. This should prove useful to cooks who always complain of having to bend down when using the oven. Moreover, since they are situated higher, children and toddlers cannot easily reach them.
As for size, the most common size for cooking ovens would be 600 mm wide. Kitchens can usually accommodate ovens this wide. These ovens usually contain four burners or hotplates. The second most common size is the 900mm wide oven. This size is gaining popularity because of its increased capacity, with generally five to six burners and additional features like a burner for woks. This should be perfect for those who love cooking large meals.
