Vision therapy recognizes seven visual capacities which are essential knowledge for eye care professionals, and interesting information for patients considering eye therapy. They are presented below.
Eye-and-Hand Coordination
There are two areas in which the eyes coordinate the hands and coordinate its work. These are the so-called big coordination and little coordination. Big coordination is needed in activities such as throwing or catching a ball as well as manipulating a car's steering wheel. It is also linked to general coordination and balance. Little coordination, on the other hand, is utilized in fine activities such as copying sentences and writing words neatly in terms of spacing and alignment.
Eye Control
This ability is concerned with keeping attention through the eyes, as well as to maintain eye contact when speaking with someone. It keeps a person from seeing inaccurately. This measures directly how vision affects attention.
Eye-and-Muscle Coordination
Humans have fourteen muscles in the eye. The brain coordinates them for a perfectly comfortable, clear and efficient eyesight. Double or blurred vision, called diplopia, causes fatigue and loss of focus. It can be treated through eye therapy. Other coordination problems reduce perception of depth and amblyopia (lazy eye) and strabismus (crossed eye).
Visual Perception
This pertains to the ability to distinguish between similar and different things, and in piecing together separate pieces to make up a whole picture. An artist who looks at a particular view and recognizes the relationships between its various features is using visual perception. A kid, on the other hand, who has trouble differentiating the word "saw" from the word "was" is impaired in this same faculty. Reading a roadmap and solving jigsaw puzzles also require a functioning visual perception. A disability in this area may necessitate eye therapy.
Visual Tracking
This faculty is in charge of the accurate and quick description of a string of words in a sentence, recognition of symbols and their interpretation, and their association with their corresponding verbal intonation. If a person is poor in this respect, words may be confused with one another, frequent simple errors made, and words cannot be broken down into their constituent parts. Eye therapy is very helpful in such cases.
Visualization
This faculty entails sight within one's own mind. Having a normal visualizing ability lets a person see a word and spell it with the mind. He can translate words into pictures, and visualize goals in his or her mind. He can also visualize imagined future consequences of contemplated actions. In short, it helps humans learn from past lessons and enables them to plan and forecast the future.
20/20 Eyesight
This is the most recognized visual faculty of all. This only means that one can see things clearly at 20 feet away what a consensus of normal eyes can also clearly see at the same distance. This does not mean, however, that one can see clearly for longer periods of time. In other words, the faculty of having 20/20 eyesight is not dependent on any time frame. It is also independent of perception of depth, night driving ability, migraines related to vision, or to vision-induced fatigue. Having this faculty only ensures that one can look at a standard eye chart long enough to read it clearly. And more importantly, it is also heavily dependent on the other six abilities mentioned above.
