Some people may consider an electric toothbrush to be some sort of accessory that isn't really a necessity where oral hygiene is concerned. That may be true for some but it may also become quite an essential for others. It all depends on the perspectives and individual needs of people in the end.
Definition
Simply put, this is a toothbrush that is battery powered. The brush head of electric type toothbrushes, unlike regular toothbrushes, aren't fixed and moves on their own accord. The bristles of such a toothbrush oscillate from side to side or rotate in one direction then back to the other. Some people may argue that this type of toothbrush is mechanical and the regular ones as manual.
Origins
Many people have been attempting to create an electric toothbrush that can be used by the general public. On the other hand, the very first toothbrush of this variant that can be marketed to patients was invented back in 1954 in Switzerland thanks to Dr. Philippe-Guy Woog. This very first mechanical toothbrush was first designed to be used by patients who have inadequate motor skills. It was also designed with orthodontic patients in mind. As the years went by, better and more efficient models were created and introduced.
Types and Variants
There are two basic electric toothbrush types sold in stores today. The first variant is called the vibrating toothbrush and the second variant is called a rotating toothbrush. Obviously, people classified these toothbrushes depending on the brushing motion being used. Vibrating toothbrushes clean teeth using the same motion one would use when brushing manually. On the other hand, rotating brushes have brush heads that spin around in two directions.
Features
Other than rotating or vibrating brush heads, there are other useful features that add value to a customer's purchase. For instance, some manufacturers have introduced the sonic toothbrush that does not only rotate its head but also causes the fluid all over the teeth to oscillate thus adding to the overall cleaning action.
Some toothbrush models even have timers that will tell the user if they have brushed their teeth in the minimal required time. Note that the American Dental Association recommends brushing for at least two minutes for proper dental hygiene.
One of the biggest issues that some adults and a lot of kids have with brushing is applying too much force when they do a brushing action. Because of this, some manufacturers have equipped their electric toothbrush models with a pressure alarm. The pressure alarm uses sensors to gauge if the user is brushing their teeth too hard. If that is the case the toothbrush either powers off or sounds an alarm when too much pressure is applied.
Effectiveness
The foremost question in people's mind is whether the electric toothbrush is more effective or not. Assuming that people brush their teeth properly, then there is actually no difference if one uses an ordinary toothbrush or a battery powered one. Nevertheless, the case in point is that not everybody does the proper brushing action. Furthermore, studies have found that the rotating oscillation electric toothbrush is slightly better than manual toothbrushes.
