Bladder leakage or urinary incontinence (UI) is something lots of people have but very few own up to. The condition is defined by the unintentional discharge of the urine, usually due to several reasons. People with UI know that they are releasing small amounts of urine but do not really think much of it. However, there are those that are suffering from chronic UI problems, often causing them embarrassment during various public events.
Fortunately, UI is now a well-researched condition with science already providing a likely treatment for the problem. In most cases however, people would first need to know exactly what type of bladder leakage they have before it can be addressed. That being said, following are the types of urinary tract incontinence known today.
Stress Incontinence
Urinary stress incontinence usually occurs when a person coughs sneezes or lifts a material. The condition is defined by a weakening with the muscles of the pelvic area. Since the muscles are weakened, any stress towards the abdomen area might cause them to open up, therefore releasing a bit of urine. It is revealed that most people who suffer from stress UI is women, specifically those who have given childbirth.
Over Active Bladder
An overactive bladder also known as urge incontinence is an involuntary movement along the bladder walls. It's characterized by a sudden urge to urinate, even if the bladder is still not yet full. The condition results from various body problems from neurological issues to overproduction of urine. Treatment for urge incontinence depends on the reason for the problem. For severe cases, an injection or even a surgery will be put forward as a likely solution. For mild cases however, medication and behavioral changes are often enough.
Functional Incontinence
This type of urinary incontinence mostly refers to the problem of seniors. Simply put, it's a physical incapability to reach the comfort room, therefore prompting them to urinate exactly where they are currently situated. In some cases, the sufferer is also incapable of communicate their problem, eventually leading to an overfilled bladder. The treatment for this is simply to provide assistance for the individual to reach the proper location. In some cases, a catheter might be attached to eliminate the need for movement.
Mixed Incontinence
Mixed incontinence combines stress and urge incontinence. It usually occurs with women and can be made worse with childbirth. Since it's mixed, applicable treatments also vary depending on the ulterior cause of the problem. In most cases, therapies are done to assess the sufferer before providing a likely treatment.
Urinary incontinence is not a normal occurrence, even if it does happen very rarely for a person. Even if there's very little release of urine, this is a symptom of an underlying problem in the individual. Hence, it is advised that people suffering from the condition do not ignore it. Instead, be wary of any new symptoms and go straight together. Mild cases are often easily treated but severe condition would necessitate more rigorous attention. Plus, the condition can really be embarrassing at some point, causing a person mental anguish in the long run.
