One of the more challenging tasks in DIY is painting. A lot of people say that while other tasks just involve strength (sawing wood, making armoires) and perhaps, good taste (selecting wallpaper, installing borders), painting combines skill and, as some people say, a 'pulse'. Not everyone has a pulse, not to mention possessing the right judgment of whether a coat is too much or too light. Moreover, the entire act of painting involves various activities, like choosing color, choosing the finish and the technique to be used in paint application . Alas, there is also the subject of choosing what instrument to use when painting - brushes, rollers and paint sprayers are just some of the options. Choosing a sprayer has various advantages, but there are also some disadvantages when using the sprayer.
As most users agree, the main advantage of using a sprayer is that it makes any painting task faster compared to using a roller or brush. One main contributor to the speed of sprayers is the fact that pain emanating from it is atomized, meaning it spreads quickly after it comes out of the implement. Paint can easily spread or stain a surface without need for it to set when a sprayer is used. Varnish or finish can also be applied quickly and conveniently with the use of a sprayer. Thus, wide areas can be done faster when a sprayer is used.
Moreover, when a painter uses a sprayer, the coat it leaves is more even and smoother compared to one produced by a brush or roller. The latter instruments usually result in drips, something that paint sprayers do not produce. Some surfaces painted with a sprayer even adapt a mirror-like consistency.
On the minus side, paint sprayers are better used in literally big jobs - both for wide surfaces and projects with a lot of volume. If a sprayer is used on a wide wall, users get to save time and effort. When painting 50 doors or windows, a sprayer gets the job done faster and with less waste. However, when the job is literally small - like painting of windowsills, sprayers lose their edge. Precise details in a project may not get a precise painting when a sprayer is used. Because of the power of paint sprayers, they are prone to oversprays, much like when a 5 year old hold a crayon too tight that he tends to color outside the lines because of the force he applies. The same is true with sprayers, especially the airless varieties that inject a jet of paint into a surface with a lot of force, it can cause wounds to someone whose body part comes too close to the tip of the sprayer .
Thus, when cleanliness and precision is important, brushes are the better choice, unless the painter is very meticulous in his or her prep work that all nooks and crannies that should not have paint are covered precisely. But in general, wider surfaces would be better painted by a sprayer.
