These days, it seems like we are having more and more trouble getting to sleep. Why might this be? We are facing a faster paced lifestyle, with more technology, and it is available 24 hours a day. We have 24 hour cable tv news, 24 hour online access, smart phones ... It's no wonder why we can't sleep.
Everybody knows that there's prescription pills available for sleep. But what about the side effects. Some people can't wake up after a dose of the stuff. Some people wake up during the night and do things that they don't even recall. So is this the best option for getting to sleep? I don't see how it could be. The repercussions of these medicines can be dangerous. On top of this they are also very pricey. So what can people do to help this? Are there safer alternatives? There are most definitely are.
Melatonin is a natural hormone that is made in the brain. It is naturally made when the sun goes down, and our body tells us it is time for sleep. But through certain conditions, including staring at a bright computer screen, this cycle can be disturbed. This can bring on severe insomnia. The reason for this is that this can disrupt our natural night/day clock. This can stop us from sleeping.
The normal dosage of melatonin varies. The most common is between 3 and 5 milligrams. But higher and lower doses have both been used effectively. The important thing is that you identify the dosage that is right for you. It can depend on your weight, in addition to the level of insomnia you are experiencing. If you're in doubt, you should consult with your doctor before taking melatonin as a sleep aid.
One caution about melatonin is that it can cause next day drowsiness. If you have to operate a car or heavy machinery, you should be careful until you know how melatonin may affect you.
If you are interested in using melatonin, you should understand that it can have side effects. These side effects are commonly mild, but they are something that you should watch out for. Consult your doctor before starting any herbal supplement program.
Valerian root is another good choice for people who are suffering from insomnia. It is free of side effects, and has been shown to work well. Several reviews have shown that valerian root can be a safe and effective course of action for insomnia. And with all of the side effects of certain medications, valerian root should be something that everybody should consider.
Even if you find that these supplements aren't a good fit for you, there are other options that you may consider. Exercise has been demonstrated to be very good for insomnia. It greatly improves energy during the day, and helps you sleep at night. Yoga has also proven beneficial for many people. Meditation is an additional option that seems to aid some. The reasons for this are unclear. But if it works, then it is clearly worth a try.
