When one hears the word "gourmet" the first thing that comes to mind is the word "expensive" or "restaurant". But what makes food gourmet, why is it really expensive? This article will discuss several concepts regarding gourmet in the hope of answering both questions and providing the reader with basic knowledge regarding gourmet food.
Gourmet Defined
The word gourmet originated from the French who used the term for wines tasters employed by wine dealers or merchants who were in the business of buying and selling wines. These wine tasters sampled and recommended what should be bought by the dealer. It evolved into a word used for fine dining that puts less emphasis on the nutritional value of the food as well as its ingredients and more emphasis or preparation, plating and taste. However nowadays gourmet has gotten a negative implication of gluttony and excess.
Gourmet as an Idea
The idea behind foods that are deemed gourmet is that it is prepared by individuals who are educated in the culinary arts such as chefs. The food itself is not something filling but rather they are made up of small portions that use raw materials that are scarce, even exotic at times. All these are then prepared carefully and then presented to the diner with elaborate designs that are meant to please not only the palate but also the eyes.
What Makes Food "Gourmet"?
As discussed earlier gourmet food is more about preparation as well as the person preparing the same and less about the actual raw materials. In other words simple foodstuff prepared by a chef can become gourmet yet exotic and expensive food prepared by unskilled hands may not be considered gourmet. However more often than not one, some or all of the ingredients used are expensive. This is fact is not something decided arbitrarily but rather it is an affirmation of the simple truth that if you want good food you have to pay good money but if you want exquisite food you have to pay a substantial amount of money to get the best, freshest and scarcest raw material.
Complete Gourmet Experience
Gourmet does not only mean something to eat but rather it can also involve expensive liquids such as fine spirits and wines. More often than not the food and the wine go together to highlight the best out of each ingredient. For example, a diner may be encouraged to pair an exquisitely prepared veal or steak with an expensive brand of red wine in order to bring out the best out of the dining experience.
Gourmet Pursuit
Pursuing gourmet food means either getting schooled culinary arts for business or pleasure or extensively going to restaurants that provide fine dining and sampling their menu. This means paying a lot of cash for expensive meals that are not filing by themselves. This means that the diner has to purchase several meals that starts with an appetizer then an entre then the main course, dessert, oh and let us not forget the wine.
