In the study of human anatomy, the relationship between the air in the surroundings and the body can been seen through the respiratory system. Breathing is a common term used to indicate the intake of oxygen and the release of carbon dioxide in and from the body.
Components
In human anatomy, the respiratory system has five components:
Nose. Considered as the only external organ of the respiratory system, the nose is a dedicated sense responsible for air intake and release. The parts of the nose are well-designed to condense, clean, and control the intake of air.
Larynx. It is an organ made of cartilage; it connects the trachea and the laryngopharynx.
Trachea. This is the tubular structure in the respiratory system which is dilated with the help of 15 to 20 cartilages.
Bronchi. These are the two divisions of the trachea which extends left and right. The primary bronchi extend to the lung's interior and form the secondary bronchi.
Lungs. This is the major organ for respiration and has two lobes. This is where the exchange of gas occurs. Physically, lungs have spongy quality. It is found to be elastic and soft which is ideal for respiration. A fact in human anatomy is that the left lung is smaller in order to accommodate the heart.
Parts
Conductive Parts. These are the parts of the respiratory system where gas exchange does not happen. These are mainly air passages and include the nose, the larynx, the trachea, and the bronchi. Respiratory passages are also classified as a group which includes the trachea, the bronchi, the bronchioles, the alveolar sacs, and the alveoli.
Respiratory Parts. This includes the lungs where the actual exchange of gas takes place.
Functions
Gas exchange. This is the process of ingesting oxygen into the body and expelling carbon dioxide. This process ensures that the body gets rid of used air and is taking in new air.
Release of carbon dioxide. As a result of carbohydrates' metabolic simplification, carbon dioxide is produced. The way it is released from the body is through blood transmission to the lungs. In the lungs, carbon dioxide is release and breathed out of the air passages. In return, oxygen is absorbed for circulation.
Blood Oxygenation. Oxygen is essential in simplifying food and in maintaining energy. Thus, during the process of gaseous exchange in the lungs, carbon dioxide is released to make room for oxygen absorption.
Facts about the Respiratory System
Yawning. Yawning is caused by the brain's sending a signal that the amount of oxygen in the lungs is low. Yawning is meant to maintain the level of oxygen level in the lungs needed for blood oxygenation.
Sneezing. Sneezing is meant to expel irritants on the nose. The nose contains mucous membranes that are sensitive to irritants like dust, pepper, pollen, and even sudden gusts of cool wind.
Hiccups. Hiccups are caused by the involuntary and sudden movements of the diaphragm. Factors are eating behavior, diaphragm irritation, or substances contained in the blood that causes the irritation.
