Also known as the cardiovascular system, the circulatory system makes up one of the organ systems being studied in human anatomy. The human circulatory system is known to be closed in a way that blood is within the limits of the blood vessels and does not directly come in contact with tissues. In terms of circulations, the blood and the lymph are two types of fluids being strewn in the circulatory system. In human anatomy, the lymphatic system is an included part of this organ system giving rise to the term cardiovascular system.
Components
The circulatory system is composed of three main components:
Heart. The main organ in which makes circulation possible by providing the force needed to transport fluids to the different parts of the body.
Blood Vessels. These are hollow tubes are classified into three:
Arteries - these are tubes made of elastic muscles are responsible for moving blood away from the heart.
Veins - these are thinner tubes that function to move blood towards the heart.
Capillaries - these are blood vessels at the atomic level that help in the nutrient exchange process between the blood and the tissues of the body.
Blood. This is a type of tissue in fluid form and had the following composition:
Plasma - acts as the blood's suspender and gives it its liquid form. This is the yellow blood component.
Blood cells - these are white and red blood cells and the platelets
Lymph. This is another fluid that circulates mainly on the lymphatic system. In human anatomy, it functions to aid in fighting off diseases the body may acquire by distributing nutrients to tissues.
Functions
Provision of nutrients. Because the body needs nutrients to sustain life, blood is used to transport them through the circulation process.
Excretory function. The blood also helps in cleaning our body parts as it collects products for excretion. This function complements the urinary system where the waste products are being filtered in the process of the urine formation process called glomerular filtration.
Protection from infection. Because the circulatory system also involves lymph fluids, the body is being nourished with the nutrients needed for fighting off infection.
Heat distribution. In line with homeostasis, the circulatory system ascertains that heat is equally distributed to all parts of the body.
Life. The circulatory system includes the heart which is responsible for pumping blood to the body. Therefore, it is essential in the maintenance of life. It is no wonder that when the heart stops beating, death is imminent.
The Type of Circulation
Pulmonary circulation. This type involves the lungs, the arteries, and the heart working together to oxygenate the blood. As de-oxygenated blood leaves the heart, the pulmonary artery takes it to the lungs for oxygenation. Along the process, carbon dioxide is released from the blood to make room for oxygen absorption. The pulmonary vein takes the oxygenated blood back to heart for pumping.
Systemic circulation. This is the process of transporting oxygenated blood away from the heart to the different tissues of the body. The time for this type of circulation to occur is much longer than pulmonary circulation.
A part of systemic circulation is coronary circulation where oxygenated blood is supplied to the heart.
