Non-medical students may relate Gray's Anatomy to a widely-known American television series (Grey's Anatomy) about the life of medical practitioners in and out the hospital. However, medical students know it more as their bible when it comes to the study of the human anatomy and physiology.
Anatomy is the study of the anatomical structure of the human body. It also covers minute anatomical structures such as cells and tissues which can only be seen under a microscope. Human anatomy is a basic knowledge that is supposed to be extensively learned by medical students during their freshmen year in studying medicine. Most students learn about anatomy through methods including textbooks, practical application, instructional videos, images, as well as audio instructions. A comprehensive textbook is usually the most basic requirement when it comes to studying anatomy.
Gray's Anatomy is actually an English language medical textbook which discusses completely and extensively the anatomy and physiology of the human body. The book was initially entitled Anatomy: Descriptive and Surgical. Many found the name too long and is often shortened to Gray's Anatomy. Later on, revised editions of the textbook were already entitled Gray's Anatomy. The book has been very influential in the field of medical study because it is one of the first extensive, reputable and updated textbook in the study of human anatomy. It has undergone various revisions since its initial publication way back in the year 1858 and continues to update as long as there are new findings and discoveries to be added in the subject of anatomy.
The book was actually the product of 18 months of intensive work by Henry Gray, a British anatomist who was born in the year 1827. He was a professor on the subject of anatomy in St. George's Hospital Medical School which was located in London. He had a very reputable image which earned the respect of many students and colleague.
In the year 1855, Henry Gray together with his colleague Henry Vandyke Carter, gathered information, performed dissections in unclaimed bodies from workhouses and hospital mortuaries, and collated their information on the human anatomy into a comprehensive book. Their goal was to produce an inexpensive anatomy book which can be used by medical students. In the year 1858, the book was launched in England under the J.W. Parker publishing company. After about a year, an English edition was published in the United States, and in 1860 a revised edition was already released in the United Kingdom.
Unfortunately, Henry Gray died shortly after at a very young age of 34 due to smallpox which he contracted while trying to cure his nephew. Henry Gray may have passed at a very young age but his work was continued by others and his book has become the most influential book in the history of medicine. To date, Gray's Anatomy is in its 40th revised edition which was published in September 26, 2008. The most recent versions of this book has 1,576 pages and is available both in print or may be downloaded online.
