Anatomy is considered as one of the most vital studies in the field of medicine. It is also considered one of the most difficult subjects to study because of the numerous body parts and internal organs involved. Still, the human anatomy is persistently being studied because it is the cornerstone of education of any medical practitioner.
The study of human anatomy as well as the way it was taught has changed through the years. Depending on the type of profession, the amount of information and the format of teaching can vary. Anatomy may be taught differently in the past but the methods of practical teaching are still the same. These two methods can either be dissection or prosection.
Dissection is also called anatomization. It involves the process of opening up and disassembling something in order to study and observe the contents within. Dissection is a term which may be used both in humans as well as in animals when studying their internal organs. In dissecting a human cadaver, the objective is often to observe the internal component and its structure, identify each organ and its function, as well as study its connection or relationship towards other components. The method of teaching anatomy through dissection usually requires actual practical application by students. Some medical students use animals such as frogs for the dissection procedure. Some schools require that each medical student have their own individual frogs to dissect in order. It was thought to be a very effective method for students to learn about anatomy.
Prosection is a programmed dissection of a human cadaver done by a professional anatomist while being watched by an audience (particularly medical students) to provide visual instructions on human anatomy. As opposed to dissection in which students are the ones doing the cutting and dissecting, prosection is done by a professional in a methodical manner to show the students each part of the anatomic structure. Prosection may also be referred to an already dissected cadaver which is sewn, reassembled and made available for the students to study and review.
Many schools today, particularly medical schools, are leaning more towards the direction of teaching students using the method of prosection. This usually means having a professional anatomist perform the dissection, specifically in human cadaver, and the students only get to observe and take notes. Some argue that the method of dissection is more effective because of its practical application. However, according to a study among the students of Birmingham, test results of a post graduate exam showed that the medical students did very well in prosection method of teaching as opposed to dissection. Such test results would imply that prosection can effectively work as a method of teaching for medical students and modern medical training.
There are people who actually disagree with these teaching methods because it shows disrespect to both animal and human life. They argue that there are alternative ways to study the human anatomy such as through graphic illustrations, instructional videos, or plastic models. To some extent, plastinated or even freeze-dried cadavers may be used just to lessen the number of cadavers needed every time a new batch of medical students are enrolled.
