Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that affects 1 out of 10 people in the United States. The exact cause is unknown and there is no cure yet . Most common symptoms are redness, acne-like lesions, thin red lines under the skin, flushing of the face. Treatment for rosacea varies according to these symptoms.

Rosacea affects both genders but is more common in women than in men. Age of onset of this disease is between 30 and 50.

It is important to determine these triggering factors and the events in which they are most likely to occur to prevent the symptoms from aggravating .

6. Treatment for rosacea focuses on alleviating the symptoms and relieving the discomfort caused by this disease. Oral antibiotics like tetracycline, doxycycline and erythromycin may be prescribed. Topical antibiotics which contain metronidazole is also effective in controlling redness and lesions. Studies also reveal that isotretinoin, when taken in low doses, is effective in treating acne-like symptoms. Other pharmacological agents that are used are topical creams and gels containing azelaic acid and sulfur.

7. Surgery is used as treatment for rosacea during the advanced stages of the disease. Laser surgery, is most commonly prescribed with dermabrasion to remove the excess skin and smoothen the surface of the skin. Other surgery options include, cryosurgery, cosmetic surgery, electrocautery and IPL photorejuvenation in mild cases.

8. Rosacea is not contagious and is normally a harmless skin condition. For some people, the symptoms are mild enough and go away on its own after some time. However, skin conditions when left untreated may pose a greater threat to one's health and overall wellbeing. It is important to consult a professional specially when experiencing exacerbation of the symptoms so complications may be avoided.
