Rosacea is a chronic skin condition with symptoms varying from harmless (redness, mild lesions, red patches) to painful and debilitating (thickening of the skin, enlarged and swollen lesions accross the face). Treatment for rosacea is not curative, but is symptomatic, which means the focus of treatment is relieving the symptoms and decreasing the discomfort caused by this skin condition. There are various types of treatment including oral antibiotics, topical agents, and use of cosmetic products.
Treatment is prescribed according to the severity of the condition. In mild cases, use of appropriate cosmetic products to conceal the generalized redness is sufficient enough because the symptoms often relieve on their own. However, in moderate to advanced cases of rosacea, wherein there is enlargement of the nose (rhinophyma), consistent redness, and appearance of red spider-like blood vessels accross the skin of the face (telangiectasia), surgery may be an option.
When it comes to surgery, there are many choices available today for treatment of rosacea. It is advisable to consult a physician or a surgeon in order to determine the right treatment. If redness becomes persistent and almost constant, a procedure called photorejuvenation may be the right solution. This type of procedure is the least invasive and uses pulses of light to even out the skin tone and treat redness and mild lesions in the skin. Photorejuvenation requires 2-5 sessions in order to see desired results.
In cases wherein the skin thickens as a result of chronic and massive inflammation, different types of surgical procedures may be prescribed. Laser surgery or laser resurfacing is one of the widely known surgical treatment for rosacea. In this type of procedure, waves of high-energy laser light penetrates the skin. When it is absorbed, this high energy light is converted into heat and causes breakdown of the damaged layer of the skin. Slowly, as the damaged skin is destroyed new skin grows in its place.
Carbon dioxide laser is most commonly used for this procedure. Patients may feel a slight tingling or burning sensation as the laser is passed accross the skin. Some patients may want to use a topical anesthetic before the procedure and some may even require a mild sedative to help them relax. Patients are also required to wear goggles to prevent the laser light from damaging the eyes. Minimal or no bleeding occurs during the whole process and when it is finished, the treated area is covered by a clean dressing. Laser surgery is commonly done outpatient in a facility or even in the doctor's office.
Other surgical procedures used as treatment for rosacea include dermabrasion to smoothen rough skin, electrocautery which uses thin, electrically charged needle to burn away spider-like blood vessels, and ultimately, cosmetic surgery to recontour the nose and remove obvious marks from the skin
Regardless of the type of surgical procedure, it is important to rest and give time for the skin to heal after the surgery. Proper knowledge on how to care for the treated area of the skin is also necessary. The treated area must be cleansed several times a day with cool water and the dressing must be changed regularly to promote healing. Prolonged sun exposure must also be avoided because new skin is more prone to sun damage. Follow up visits with the doctor or surgeon is also necessary to monitor skin progress and prevent complications from occuring.
