Erythema of the face, spots, red patches and red bumps that look like acne: a lot of people are familiar with these symptoms. For some people, these symptoms are harmless and therefore, they ignore it. For others, skin problems may result in a decrease in self confidence and may also affect their overall well being.
If you are experiencing the symptoms above, you may have a condition called Rosacea, which is a chronic skin condition characterized by redness, swelling and various types of sores on the skin of the face. Chronic means this skin condition develops over time and may last for many years. It affects both sexes but is most common among fair skinned women with ages between 30 and 50. Rosacea is also characterized by periods of exacerbation and remission. Sometimes, the symptoms are alleviated on their own and sometimes the symptoms aggravate, prompting the need for intervention. Treatment for rosacea varies from creams, lotions, gels, and antibiotics.
In the beginning rosacea begins as generalized redness spreading accross the skin of the face, mainly on the cheeks, nose and forehead. On some people the symptoms stay this way over a period of time and do not get any worse. However in some cases, additional symptoms may develop such as red patches on the skin with papules (small bumps) and pustules (small bumps with pus), stinging or burning sensation on the face, and the occurance of tiny blood vessels that are spider-like. Advanced cases involve swelling bumps that spread accross the skin of the nose, and redness and irritation of the eyes.
The exact cause why rosacea occurs is unknown. There may be hereditary factors, and abnormal inflammatory reactions to various triggering factors involved. These triggers vary from one person to another and may include excessive sun exposure, spicy foods, emotional stress, and strenous exercises. Avoidance of these triggering factors play a great part in the development and treatment for rosacea. It is advisable to consult a doctor in order to properly identify these factors and how to avoid them.
Treatment for rosacea may also include antibiotics that are either taken by mouth or applied to the skin. Antibiotics like tetracycline, doxycycline, minocycline, and metronidazole are proven effective in controlling the symptoms. Other medications may also be considered. Low doses of isotretinoin and topical azelaic acid are also very effective in treating various skin conditions.
Lately, dermatological laser surgery have been proven to offer the best treatment for rosacea. This type of surgical procedure immediately helps relieve the symptoms and adequate number of sessions result in permanent elimination of redness, swelling, papules and pustules making it the treatment of choice for rosacea.
It is greatly helpful to gain proper knowledge regarding skin conditions that may not only cause pain and discomfort but may also lead to loss of self confidence due to changes in appearance. It is also important to note that roseacea is not contagious . It is avoidable, with proper knowledge of triggering factors, and very treatable with various medications and medical procedures available today.
