Rosacea is a skin condition affecting 1 in 10 of the adult population. It causes the skin of the face to turn red. Patches, bumps, marks, and acne-like blemishes develop as the condition aggravates. In advanced cases, affectation of the eyes and skin thickening around the nose may occur as a result of the body's response towards chronic inflammation. The process of treatment for rosacea is not focused on the curative, rather it is focused on the elimination and relief of symptoms and improvement of skin condition. There are many types of treatment for rosacea and listed below are the four most effective ways.
1. Avoid triggering factors. Rosacea patients may avoid exacerbation of the symptoms by knowing the factors that triggers them. These factors differ from person to person and may change over time depending on a person's lifestyle and the kind of surroundings a person is exposed to. Determining these triggering factors is the first step towards the treatment for rosacea. You may consult a doctor to help you establish these factors. You may also be advised to keep a personal diary of your daily activities to help discover events that may lead to exacerbations or flare-ups. Common triggering factors include extreme exposure to sunlight, emotional stress and anxiety, periodic exposire to hot and cold weather, strenous exercises, ingestion of spicy foods, alcoholic beverages and foods rich in caffeine, and usage of various
skin products. Adverse reaction to medications is also a factor for some people.
2. Oral antibiotics. There are a lot of questions that may arise regarding the prescription of antibiotics as treatment for rosacea. Some may ask, how come antibotics are prescribed, when rosacia is not a type of infection caused by bacteria? It is not known exactly how antibiotics treat rosacea, but experts believe that the anti-inflammatory properties of antibiotics, not the bacteria-fighting properties, are the main reason why it is effective. Rosacea is caused by an abnormal inflammatory reaction and antibiotics is a readily available solution to this. The antibiotics of choice are the tetracycline antibiotics (tetracycline, doxycycline and minocycline). These oral medications are specially helpful in relieving eye-related symptoms brought about by rosacea.
3. Topical agents. Different topical gels and creams are available in the market today to be used as treatment for rosacea. These gels and creams may be used together with oral antibiotics for better results. Topical medications containing metronidazole, sulfur and azelaic acid are proven solutions during times of flare-ups. These topical agents also control chronic symptoms such as redness, papules and pustules. Among these, Metronidazole is the topical treatment of choice for rosacea. It is a broad spectrum medication that has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects. It is recommended to use these topical agents once or twice per day depending on the dosage prescribed by your doctor.
4. Laser surgery. This type of treatment for rosacea is considered for patients who are experiencing advanced symptoms, most specially if the condition is affecting the eyesight, causing severe physical
discomfort, and interfering with the performance of activities of daily living. Dermatological laser surgery is a harmless procedure that utilizes rays of light to penetrate the skin and reduce the size of the veins that have been enlarged. If rosacea caused the skin to thicken over time, carbon dioxide lasers are used to remove the excess layers of skin, making it smooth and healthy again. A type of laser treatment called photorejuvenation also helps to reduce the redness associated with rosacea.
