A water heater, particularly an electric water heater, is not a very complicated device. Unheated water gets into the tank, then heated by electrical elements and on demand, heated water exits the tank. Place the tank at the center of the platform. Position the tank with the drain towards the front. Make sure that the platform is steady and does not rock.

Prepare the copper tubing, cutting it based on the planned lengths. Clean the ends of the tube with steel wool for the outside and a wire brush on the inside. Apply flux on the inside and outside of the tubes. Solder the tubes to the adapter fittings. Use Teflon to seal the pipe threads.

Thread the tubing and adapter into the tank. Tighten with a wrench to prevent any leaks. Connect the tubing with the valves. Thread the drain tube into the relief valve and tighten it with a wrench.

Remove the cover plate in the tank which protects the electrical wires. Use a screwdriver to take out the screw holding the plate in place. Punch out the knockout holes where the conduits will be placed. Connect the conduits and wires based on instructions indicated on the manual.

Repair

Like any other appliances, water heaters fail . If this happens, the following sequence of checking should be followed before calling for repair: check the main service panel for tripped circuit breakers or burned-out fuses. If the fuse or circuit breaker is working fine, check the heater.

Open the heater by removing the access panels. Press the reset button of each thermostat and listen intently for a clicking sound. The clicking sound is caused by the thermostat element expanding as each element heats up. If there is no clicking sound and no heat produced, there may be a problem with the heater wiring, elements, or thermostats.
