Air Conditioners have been around since the second half of the 20th century. Initially used for industrial cooling purposes, residential air conditioning units have been developed to provide comfort for the home during warm weather. As with any other equipment, window or room air conditioning units require periodic maintenance to ensure proper and efficient operation. A well-maintained AC unit is capable of cooling the air faster and requires less electricity to operate.
Doing basic maintenance work on a room AC unit is fairly easy as long as the proper procedures are followed . A homeowner only requires a shop vacuum and a couple of common hand tools. The following procedures can serve as a guide in performing basic AC unit maintenance:
Unplug the AC unit. Carefully remove the front grill and air filter.
Check the air filter. The air filter is used to trap pollen, dust, and dirt particles. These impurities in the air will accumulate in time, requiring periodic cleaning. A clogged air filter adversely affects the cooling performance of an AC unit.
Wash the air filter with soap and water. If the air filter has deteriorated, it is best to change it with a new one. There are some commercial air filters which can be cut to fit using a pair of scissors.
Remove the AC unit from the window. Remove dirt, dust, and other debris which has accumulated on the window sill. Remove the screws that secure the AC unit to its cabinet. Use a shop vacuum to rid of leaves and other debris which found its way inside the AC unit.
Cover all electrical components with plastic bags to avoid damaging it. Using a paintbrush and soapy water, clean the inside of the unit. This will take out stubborn dirt which was not removed by vacuuming.
With a water hose, clean the inside of the AC unit, focusing on the base, coils, and condensation pan. Remove the plastic bags then dry off the parts with a clean dry cloth. To make drying faster, use a fan to blow air into the unit.
When the AC unit is completely dry, reassemble the AC unit and reinstall it back to the window. It is a widespread practice of allowing the AC unit to stay idle for a day before using it again.
Basic maintenance of an AC unit usually works well in areas where dust and other debris do not rapidly build up.
