Air conditioning units are used to control the temperature of a structure at a comfortable level by removing heat from the air by means of a refrigerant fluid. As heat is removed from the air being circulated, the surroundings become cooler. Air conditioning units are used in various structures such as houses, multi-storey buildings, warehouses, and other facilities where the required internal temperature should be lower than the external area.
Air conditioning units come in different types such as ducted split type, ductless, window, and portable. Window air conditioners are also known as room air conditioners. This type of air conditioning unit has a limited cooling capacity (5000 to 24000 btu/hr), much cheaper, and easier to install. However, window air conditioners tend to be inefficient and are also prone to failure due to misuse. If a window air conditioning unit stops working, follow these steps before calling in a technician.
First, check which components of the AC unit is working by turning each individual component on and off. If the fan does not run, check the power supply. A circuit breaker might have been tripped or a fuse might have blown. Reset the circuit breaker or replace the blown fuse with a new one as needed .
Check the fan switch and motor. The fan blades should spin without any obstruction. If the fan is running but the compressor is not, verify if the compressor is not overheating. If it is, turn off the AC unit and let the compressor cool. Once the compressor has cooled off, check the compressor motor.
Start the AC unit again. This time switch it to cooling mode. At this point the compressor should start and you will hear a clicking sound. If the compressor does start but fails to cool the room properly, the refrigerant levels needs to be checked. Having the required amount of refrigerant is a key factor in the operation of an AC unit.
If the compressor starts but shuts down immediately, it is usually a sign of a broken compressor. At this point, it would be much cheaper to buy a new AC unit than to have the compressor repaired.
If the compressor fails to start, check the thermostat. The thermostat should be set below room temperature to ensure that the compressor will turn on. If the compressor is good and the thermostat is working properly, there might be an issue with the control board. At this point, it is a good idea to call the technician.
