Gas furnaces are the most common source of heat for the home. Without it, staying indoors becomes uncomfortable, especially during the winter season. With temperatures ranging from a low -14 degrees Celsius in January to a high 27 degrees Celsius in July, homes in Alberta, Canada rely heavily on gas furnaces to keep it warm throughout the day.
However, it is quite unavoidable that gas furnaces will start to malfunction due to regular wear and tear. While some problems need to be checked by a gas furnace technician, most problems can be taken care of by following simple troubleshooting steps. If your gas furnace begins to act and sound weird, do not panic, most of the time, following these steps will get the furnace up and running again.
Gas furnace turns on and off more often than usual
This can be caused by a problem with the air filter, blower motor, or the thermostat.
Check the air filter. If the air filter has accumulated too much dirt and other residue, it has to be replaced with a new one.
Check the blower motor. Try applying a few drops of lubricating light weight oil on the blower motor lubrication ports. Test the tension on the blower belt by checking if it depresses about 1 inch at the center. Tighten the belt if needed. Frayed belts should be replaced.
Check the thermostat. The thermostat heat anticipator might need adjustment. When the heat anticipator is out of adjustment the furnace would either: turn on and off more frequently, fail to reach the programmed heat setting or exceed it.
Gas furnace blower fails to turn itself off
This can be caused by incorrect thermostat settings or a problem with the furnace fan limit control switch.
Check the thermostat settings. It most likely to have been set to allow the fan to run continuously.
If the thermostat has no settings for the fan, check the furnace fan limit control switch. The control switch might need to be reset or replaced.
Gas furnace is noisy while running
This can be caused by loose blower belts, bearings that require lubrication, or gas burners.
Check blower belts. If the blower belt is loose and starts to slip, it will cause a high-pitched squealing sound. Tighten the belt as necessary. If the belt shows signs of fraying it should be replaced.
Check motor or shaft bearings. Poorly-lubricated bearings need to be oiled to remove any sound. Light weight oil should be applied on the blower lubrication ports.
Dirty gas burners should be cleaned to remove a low-pitched rumbling sound.
