Household heating is an important concern for homes, particularly those which experience cold temperatures. The provision of heat creates a more comfortable environment inside the home. Through the centuries, man has made numerous methods of producing and introducing heat inside the home. Early heat sources required wood for fuel, followed by oil and gas, and electricity. Today, gas-fueled furnaces are the most common source of household heating.
Gas furnaces use natural gas as fuel, which is commonly purchased from the local utility. A basic gas furnace is equipped with an igniter and a thermostat. The thermostat has a sensor which enables it to determine the temperature of its surroundings and compares it with the programmed temperature value. If the temperature falls below the programmed temperature, the igniter is turned on and starts burning fuel. The heat generated is them distributed throughout the house through air ducts.
Sooner or later something goes wrong and the gas furnace stops working properly. The malfunction may be caused by different factors and most of the time proper troubleshooting is required to determine and correct the problem. For example, a gas furnace may suddenly stop producing heat or may not be producing enough heat.
The gas furnace is not producing any heat
This can be caused by a problem with the thermostat, circuit breaker, fuse, gas control valve, pilot light, or electronic ignition.
Check the thermostat. The settings might have been set too low and require adjustment. For analog thermostats, try cleaning the contacts.
Check the circuit breaker or fuse. A tripped circuit breaker requires to be reset. On the other hand, a blown fuse needs to be replaced.
Check the gas control valve, it might have been closed.
Check the pilot light. Non-electronic pilot lights need to be relit. For electronic ignition systems, have it inspected by a technician to avoid damaging sensitive parts.
The gas furnace is not producing enough heat
This can be caused by a problem with the air filter, gas burner, or combustion air chamber.
Check the air filter. Dirty air filters need to be replaced with new ones.
Check the gas burner. Accumulated dirt on the gas burners can affect the amount of heat produced. Alternatively, the gas burner may need to be adjusted by a gas furnace technician.
Check the combustion air chamber. Look for any obstructions in the air flow.
