A lot of people get suggestions that when it comes to auto insurance, getting the lowest values, or at least those required by the state, is never enough. In fact, a number of financial advisers recommend that a driver should get insurance coverage that would equal the total value of his or her assets. That means that drivers would need to total the dollar amounts of their car, house, savings and other investment instruments and get insurance to match that amount.
That may sound too extravagant for some, but for the wise, it is supposed to be a safe figure. Besides, to paraphrase an old adage, it is better to be safe than sorry, especially when it comes to something that will protect a person from paying huge amounts of money for himself, his car and possibly for another party in case an accident happens.
But with money quite difficult to get these days, consumers deem that getting insurance with values that are too high may just be a bit too much, especially when one can use the money for other equally important things. So, practical and budget-conscious drivers who want to get car insurance ask how much auto insurance one really needs. The answer should depend on what kind of policy the driver is thinking of getting.
There are quite a number of sub-policies that go under the two main categories of auto insurance policies: the liability policies, or those policies that provide money to the other party in an accident wherein the driver is at fault (let's call them Type 1, just for this article, for the sake of clarity), and 'personal' policies, or those that provide compensation to the driver and his or her car when an accident happens, whether or not it is the driver's fault (to be referred as type 2). Let's sort out the exact amounts from this classification.
First up is the Personal Injury Protection or PIP policy. PIPs are Type 2 policies that give money to the driver for his or her medical bills in an event of an accident. However, if a driver already has a medical insurance and he or she does not live in one of the 16 states that currently require this type of insurance, they should try to read his or her medical or health insurance first. There are some people who are already covered sufficiently in case of an accident with their health or medical coverage, so having PIP when it is not required by the state is overkill.
Another kind of Type 2 policy is uninsured or underinsured coverage. Even if the driver is not at fault in an accident, there are instances when he or she still has to pay for his or her medical expenses. A driver has to make sure he or she has sufficient coverages in the event that the other party is not insured or has a policy that cannot cover his or her medical bills. Uninsured or underinsured coverage is relatively affordable in a majority of states.
For $40, a driver can already have coverage of at least $100,000. Moreover, if a driver gets into a collision incident with a driver who is either underinsured or uninsured, this type of auto insurance will aid in paying costs that a health insurance coverage will not. It would also be good thinking for a driver to cover himself or herself with uninsured or underinsured coverage that has the same value.
