For a majority of drivers, auto insurance is actually not just one, but a collection of various policies that aim to protect them in various ways. Some drivers do have only one type of car insurance, but most of them actually have a mix of these policies, without them knowing it. Nowadays, nearly all, if not all states require owners of cars to own insurance, and a majority of these states even have set a required minimum amount for the various policies. Drivers can find out what the minimum values are for the state they are in; they are listed in the DMV (Dept. of Motor Vehicles) website. The same information also can be found in the websites of the various states' local vehicle department.
So, what are the consequences of a driver not owning a car insurance policy? Obviously, if a driver gets into an accident and he or she does not own any insurance policy and he or she is at fault, his or her medical bill, as well as the medical bill of his or her passengers, if any, will be shouldered by his or her own pocket. He or she will also have to pay for any damage incurred by his or her own car.
Moreover, if the driver does not have any kind of liability coverage, should there be another party that is involved in an accident and the driver is at fault, the driver will have to pay for any medical bills of the injured members of the other party. He or she will also have to pay for the damages of the other vehicle. Again, all of these payments will be shouldered by the driver is he or she is the one at fault in an accident. Otherwise, if a driver is found out to not have car insurance, his or her license may be suspended and his or her car may be impounded, even if he or she does not get involved in an accident. .
Going back to minimum coverage states require in auto insurance, drivers are advised that they should not only have that. For example, in the state of New Jersey, car owners are required only a 15/30/5 liability package. This means that $15,000 will be given as payment to an individual's medical bills of the other party in an accident, $30,000 for the total of the other party's medical bills and $5,000 to repair any damage of the other party's car. With an average car these days costing at least $20,000, will a $5,000 coverage be enough? Moreover, should the medical expenses of the other party exceed $30,000, the driver who is at fault will have to shoulder the excess amount.
On the other hand, drivers with policies that exceed the statement minimum values have at least a sort of leeway just in case the damage to the other party's car or the medical bills of the other party are higher. It is a wise decision to get auto insurance that has a higher value compared to the state's requirements. Wise investors advise that a driver should get coverage that would equal the amount of the total value of their assets. They should add the values of their car, house, savings and investments and get insurance totaling that amount. This would follow more of an 'It's better to go over than to come short" mentality.
