Interestingly, hockey jerseys have a very remarkable history. When you see your dad or your uncle wear them now, jerseys seem like very mundane pieces of clothing that men have turned into winter staples or something that they throw on during hockey season to show how supportive they are of the Canucks or the Mighty Ducks or whoever their favorites are. But fact is, the way that these jerseys started share an integrated history with that of hockey as the sport itself.
In the Beginning
When the National Hockey League was started in 1917, there were only 4 teams that were a part of it. Thus, only 4 uniforms were made. The 4 teams were the Toronto Arenas, the Ottawa Senators, the Montreal "Canadiens" and the Montreal Wanderers. Eventually the O'Brien cup went to the Toronto Arenas after they beat the Montreal Canadiens, 2-1.
The jerseys back then were still made of heavy wool and cotton blend to keep the players toasty while skating on ice. The jerseys were fairly unremarkable when it came to their design. The Canadiens had a conservative dark blue, deep red and white color combination, the Wanderers used deep red and white, the Senators used the same color combination as the Canadiens, but used striped patterns and the Arenas used dark blue and white.
Turning point
A pivotal point in the NHL's hockey jersey history was the 1927 to 1928 season. The total number of teams has grown to 10. The Toronto Maple Leafs team launched their 2 types of uniforms. For their home games, the Maple Leafs sported dark blue striped hockey jerseys. For their away games, they wore plain white jerseys with the Toronto Maple Leafs' blue logo emblazoned on the chest.
This was also the same year when the NY Rangers won the Stanley Cup and they were the first Americans to do so since the NHL was established.
Dozen teams
The original count of 4 teams now ballooned to 12 teams. The 12 teams are as follows, the Boston Bruins, the Toronto Maple Leafs, the St. Louis Blues, the Chicago Black Hawks, the Pittsburg Penguins, the Detroit Red Wings, the Philadelphia Flyers, the Los Angeles Kings, the Montreal Canadiens, the Oakland Seals, the Minnesota North Stars and the New York Rangers. This was also the start of the year when the teams used brighter colors and more designs to be donned on the jerseys. The Oakland Seals for example, used blue and green stripes and a very intricate logo that was initially as C when they were the California Seals, then was changed to an O on 1967 when they became the Oakland Seals.
Tragically, this was also the same year when the first and only on-the-ice related injury resulted to a tragic death. Bill Masterton of the Minnesota North Stars died on January 15.
Current Years
On 2007 to 2008, Reebok unveiled the modern day jerseys that had 2 amazing qualities. One they were very light weight and two, these hockey jerseys were sweat repellant.
