Hockey jerseys are very popular sports attire that a lot of men use casually even if they are not engaged in a game of hockey. But what is a hockey jersey really?
A hockey jersey is a piece of clothing worn on the upper half of the body by hockey players. It is also called as a sweater before when hockey jerseys were traditionally made from wool, similar to sweaters. Nowadays though, jerseys are made of synthetic materials, mostly cotton and polyester blend that allow the wearer to keep dry on the inside and absorb moisture.
Those who play hockey know that jerseys need some time to "break in." They need to be stretched before they can fit well and comfortably to the wearer. The jersey actually has to be flexed so that it can cover the hockey pads that a player uses to protect himself.
The design of the hockey jersey is basically simple. The front part of the jersey will contain the logo of the team in the center part. On the upper right hand side of the team logo, there is a "C" that is seen on the jersey. That is a patch to connote team captains. For assistant captains, they get the "A" mark on the same place to highlight their position in the team.
The back part of the hockey jersey has the name of the player near the nape area. Typically, only the family name of the player is seen on that upper back portion of the clothing piece. But in cases where, in the same team, siblings with the same last name are both players, their first name's initials are also embroidered.
At the center of the jersey's back portion is the number of the team player. Numbers in the NHL are until the 98th. Hockey jerseys also have other designs emblazoned on them, sometimes the name of the country that the team represents or a sponsor.
Given the nature of hockey as a game, jerseys have what is called as a fight strap. This particular strap is used to attach the jersey to the pants of the player. This makes sure that if the player does engage in a heated fight with another player, the jersey will stay in place. As a matter of fact, there is a rule that if a player that gets into a fight manages to get his jersey off his torso, he gets an additional penalty on top of the fighting incident. The reason why this has to be strictly implemented is because of the fact that getting your jersey over your head, covering your entire noggin will result to major injuries while one is in a fight.
Hopefully, this article gave you a good introduction in the world of jerseys. There are still more things to know about hockey jerseys and they are all pretty interesting, to say the least.
