For thousands of years, people have grown to recognize the presence and importance of a certain spaces or partitions outside the house which eventually became known as patio sets. This style of beautifying and invigorating the house has also become one of the most practiced and cherished works of art perfected by many people in the said business. Even now, the world today continues to recognize outside patio sets as undeniably worthwhile sources of leisure and entertainment that could prove beneficial to home owners and visitors alike. As far as style and traditions go, it is important to understand the evolution of the patio set through its course in time.

Some of the most primitive styles of patio sets started from scratch as usual front porches of farm houses in the rural areas. However, during those times, these outside areas were actually considered as living room extensions that cater visitors of these home owners. The old times, as compared with the patio outdoor sets of today, had larger spaces. And during those times, larger spaces meant larger outdoor stimulation. Because of this, farmers wanted to put outdoor pieces of furniture that were as huge as the spaces of the areas were. Farmers then thought of this practice as impractical, so what they did was popularize the placement of rocking chairs outside their houses. Also known as the American chair, the rocking chair was an instantly recognizable figure in the eighteenth century. Nowadays, the wooden rocker is like a needle in a hay stack. Years after the popularization of the rocking chair, the porch swing made its way into people's homes. This was a popular choice for patio outdoor sets simply because the casual swinging made instant air conditioners that time.

During the Victorian times, wicker patio furniture became the new trend. Compared with the previous styles in the farm areas, the Victorian style of outdoor arrangements became a huge hit with the people of those times due to its flashy and fancy nature. Aside from the usual chairs, porches and tables, ornaments and decorations like plants, flower pots, and beautiful tables were added in order to revamp the patio arrangements. These kinds of arrangements were especially popular with the rich people of that time. Richer families had more decorations and pieces of furniture outside their homes compared with those from the lower classes. Hence, during the Victorian period, social status marked the proliferation of patio furniture.

In the Southern areas of the globe, their own version of the Victorian sets was the veranda. The verandas had similar wicker furniture like the Victorian sets, but the most prominent characteristic here was their use of wrought iron. The conditions were hot in these areas; that is why upholstered materials were out of the question.

As the years passed by, people still continued to enrich their outdoor furniture as long as they had the budget for it. The only difference in today's patio sets is that they have started to include new ideas like outdoor kitchens and relaxation rooms to add a modern touch.
