Women's swimwear was created ever since women learned to swim. According to its historical background they were created from loin cloths and then turned into swimming outfits in the 1800s. Later on, they became heavy bathing attires and in 1958, the comfortable, lightweight and water-friendly Spandex was created to give ways to new designs of the swimwear. presently, swimwear has various designs for any shape and size. Each bathing suit now has a purpose, whether to accentuate or conceal a certain part of the body.
The Evolution of Women's Swimwear
According to evidence collected such as drawings and paintings, swimming was a sport and fitness training in the ancient civilizations. Modern swimsuits were created in the middle of the 19th century and used in the U.S. and Europe. The original piece was a swim dress made of black wool and covered the entire body of a woman. Bloomers were worn underneath and the swimsuit was designed with ribbons, collars and bows. Long black socks completed the outfit so that the woman would be entirely covered. Swim caps were also worn as well as swim shoes made of lace. It was only the wealthy who could afford a swimsuit while those who wanted to use one would rent from vendors.
After the ancient times, various types of modern women's swimwear were created. The bikini is a famous one and it comes with a top and a bottom. It was created by the Louis Reard, an engineer from France in 1946. This revolutionary creation made people look at the swimsuit in a different manner. Women were able to show off a great body and get a tan while on the beach. In the beginning, they were created from either cotton or wool. When Spandex and later on Lycra were introduced, the bikini became a fashionable and chic swimwear. The designers eventually used fewer fabric making the bikini skimpier than ever.
The one-piece swimsuit was created at the start of the new century as bathing suits became more popular. As years passed by, manufacturers used less fabric with the one-piece swimwear thus making it flattering. Aside from swimming, this was used by women during athletic events and leisure activities. This was then created with a racerback strap so that during swimming competitions, players would be able to move their arms freely.
Combining the one-piece women's swimwear and the bikini, designers created the tankini. This had the usual bottom of the bikini but the top was longer thus covering the midriff. This kind of swimwear was more appreciated by women who felt uncomfortable with the bikini but wanted to wear a two-piece swimsuit. It is more stylish than the one-piece suit and more reserved than a two-piece bikini. For those who wish to have a tan on their tummies, they just have to roll up the upper part.
For the future, designers want the swimsuit to be an expression of fashion by the wearer. It should not only be used mainly for swimming but must serve as the future's fashion statement. From its humble beginnings, the women's swimwear has truly evolved with time, making it available not only in shops but also on the internet for purchasing.
