If you thought maintaining lawnmower blades was a dangerous job, then you re right--at least, partially. While you can do it yourself, removing, sharpening or replacing lawn mower blades requires a great deal of safety and know-how to make sure that you don t harm yourself or your lawn mower.
How often should I check my mower blades?
Frequency of maintenance is really a question of how much you use your mower. During a typical growing season, it is best to check the blades at least once a month. In addition, you ll know when it is time to replace or sharpen the blades by examining your grass. After you cut it, the edges should be sharp and clean; if not, it is probably time to check out your mower blades.
Removing Mower Blades
Whether you re sharpening or replacing your blades, the first step is removal. The first thing you should always do when performing maintenance on your mower blades is to make sure that the mower is off and disconnect the spark plug so that it cannot be accidentally turned on.
Then, siphon out any gasoline so that it doesn t spill on you--or worse, on your mower engine--when you put the mower on its side. After removing the gas, do the same thing for the oil, using a different siphon. Take care that the oil and gas do not come in contact with one another. Once you have removed all the fluids from your mower, you can use a wrench to loosen and take off the nut that secures the blade deck. Now you re ready to take off the old blade and sharpen it or replace it with a new one.
Sharpening Mower Blades
If you choose to sharpen your blades instead of replacing them, start out by using a steel brush to get rid of any rust and dirt. If you own a hand file, you can use it to sharpen the blade yourself. To ensure that the blade will be balanced once your replace it, set it on a support beam to see if both sides are the same shape and weight. And if you don t own a sharpening tool, you could always take the blades to a place that does lawnmower repairs for a quick sharpening.
Replacing Mower Blades
This process is straightforward and simple. Re-install the mower blades by reversing the steps that you took to take them off. Make sure to replace your spark plug and put gas back in your lawn mower before taking it for a spin.
