Your home heating, ventillation and air conditioning system gets a lot of wear and tear, no matter what time of year it is. It is important to remember that in addition to functioning on demand, HVACs are also submitted to changes in weather on a regular basis. While it is true that most repairs need to be done by a professional to keep your system in good working condition, there are certain routine checks you can do yourself to keep your HVAC in top shape. Read on to find out more.
What HVAC parts can I maintain myself?
Typically, an HVAC contains two main areas: the evaporator (inside) and the condenser unit (outdoors.) While some homeowners can clean the condenser unit, it depends on what company manufactures your HVAC and the type of insulation it contains.
Cleaning The Condenser
Condenser units, however, are much easier to access and clean. There are several fool-proof ways to make sure this part is fully functioning.
1. Keep the air filter in good repair.
It is recommended to clean or switch out the air filter of an HVAC about once a month to make sure that it runs properly. Air filters can be purchased at any home improvement retailer, but remember to buy a new one before taking out the old one, so that you don t run the risk of the unit operating without a filter in place.
2. Make sure that the outdoor HVAC unit is in a good location.
Another key part of the HVAC to maintain is the outdoor condenser unit. During the summer months, keep it protected from direct sunlight, and purchase a sturdy cover to put over it.
3. Clean the condenser unit.
During summer and autumn, check it regularly and remove any leaves or debris that may have gotten stuck in it. Each year, before cold weather arrives, clean the condenser unit s parts, especially the blades of the fan. This can be done easily and quickly by taking off the condenser unit s cover; just make sure to power off the unit before you do maintenance.
4. Check the condition of the concrete support.
The condenser of your HVAC unit should rest on a slab of concrete, but sometimes this foundation can settle or shift. Use a carpenter s level to make sure the concrete support is still in place, and if it isn t, use gravel or wood blocks to adjust its position and height.
Remember, if you have any questions about the way your HVAC works, it is always better to call a professional than to try to fix it yourself. However, these tips will hopefully help you detect a problem before it becomes a costly need for repair.
