Riding lawn mowers can make the chore of mowing the grass quick and easy. To be fully functional, they need regular maintenance. The blades of riding lawn mowers need to be sharpened or replaced at least once a year. Before starting the process of replacing the blades of riding lawn mowers, make sure the engine is off and cool to the touch. First disconnect the spark plug ignition wire as well as the battery's red cable. The wrench cannot come in contact with any metal during this process so be careful where you lay the battery cable. This is a safety measure that should not be skipped.
Next raise the deck of the riding lawn mowers to the highest level possible. Locate the engine pulley and remove the belt keeper; you will have to take off the self-tapping screw to do this. Remove the belt from the pulley as well. Now remove the bow tie clip located on the left rear side of the riding lawn mowers as well as the hanger rod. Repeat this on the right side. The deck lift rod on the mounting bracket should be removed next; you can accomplish this by taking off the bow tie clip on the deck stabilizer rod.
The bow tie clip attached to the PTO cable when removed will release the idler arm's tension spring. Now you can slide the deck of the riding lawn mowers out. If you turn over the deck you will see the blades. If you are not already wearing gloves, put them on now. Before trying to replace the blade, be sure to secure it.
To remove the blades of the riding lawn mowers, take off the bolt that is attached to the spindle. Now assemble the new blade according to the included instructions. It needs to be tightened to the correct level of torque. Do not know how much your riding lawn mowers require? Check your owner's manual. Place the newly assembled blade in the correct position and you can begin assembling the mower.
Riding lawn mowers may not need their blade replaces. Sharpening them may do the trick. To sharpen the blades of the riding lawn mowers, you will first need to remove them. Drag the blade up and down on a blade grinder. Make sure you use a 40-degree angle. Do not push the blade too hard or you can deform the shape of it. If the metal becomes the color of straw, stop sharpening immediately. The blade is too hot and can be damaged by the grinder.
If you take the time to care for your riding lawn mowers, they will last you for years to come. For other regular necessary maintenance, refer to the owner's manual that came with your mowers.
