How to Replace Heating Elements and the Hot Water Heater Parts Needed to Do it.

If you've ever been in the shower with soap in your hair and all over your body and had the hot water run out you might feel a chill in your body right now just thinking about it. If this happens you may have a bad heating element in your hot water heater. There are usually two heating elements and if one of them goes bad you may have hot water when you first get in the shower but it won't last for the whole shower, especially if you live in my house where it is common to have two people in the shower at the same time.

This is fairly simple to fix. The hot water heater parts that you will need are two heating elements, even if only one is bad you will want to replace both of them because the second one is probably not far behind. Always remember to switch off the electrical supply when working on any electric appliance. Go to your home improvement store and look in the hot water heater parts section. You should be able to find the heating element for your make and model hot water heater. Take the old one with you to be sure that you have the right one.

Attach a hose to the outlet at the bottom of the hot water heater and close the inlet valve at the top of the hot water heater. Drain the water out of the hot water heater.

There are two raised access panels on the side of the hot water heater. These panels each have two screws one on top and one on the bottom of the panel. Remove these screws and take off the panels exposing the heating elements. Using a screwdriver remove the electrical terminals from the heating element. It is best to test the resistance of the elements. To do this set your multimeter at X1000 and attach one lead to the element terminal and the other to the mounting screw the reading should be infinity if it is not this is the reason you do not have hot water. Next, using a wrench remove the heating element from the hot water heater.

When replacing the heating elements do so in reverse order, in order to prevent leakage replace the O rings also. The O rings can also be found in the hot water heater parts section where you found the heating elements. Screw the elements in place in a clockwise direction and replace the terminal wires. Replace the access panels.

Next be sure that the drain valve at the bottom of the hot water heater is closed and open the fill valve at the top of the hot water heater. This will fill the hot water heater with water ready to be heated by the new elements. Don't forget to turn the breaker back on.

Give it some time to heat the water and you're ready for a hot shower again.
