The washing machine is one of the most desired appliances for a household. It allows homeowners the convenience of doing their laundry without leaving the comfort of their home. Without a washing machine, people have to drag their bags of dirty clothes and hefty detergent containers to the nearest coin laundry mat. Like all appliances, they need to be maintained and cleaned to operate at its optimum level.
How can you know when your washing machine needs to be cleaned? The most obvious sign is your clothes coming out either smelling or having unexplained stains. When the time comes to cleanse their washing machine, many people make the mistake of paying an expensive bill so a professional can tackle the job. Cleaning a washing machine is easy to do and will usually take under a hour.
There are four parts that each need attention - the exterior, the lid, the tub, and the dispensers. The outside of the washing machine is simple enough - just wipe the sides with a rag and your favorite all-purpose cleaner. A mixture of vinegar and water is a natural alternative. The lid of the washing machine is a bit more difficult. The entire surface area, especially the edges, needs to be scrubbed. This will help remove both mildew and the detergent residue that has build up over time. The exterior and the lid of the washing machine only needs to be cleaned every few months.
The tub consists of the area where the clothes are dropped in. The first step is to run the washing machine through a complete cycle with the hottest water possible. Before starting the cycle, pour in two cups of lemon juice. If the odors remain after this cycle, you can try a quart of chlorine bleach and run it again on the longest and hottest cycle. When it finishes, immediately add a quart of white vinegar and complete a third cycle. The bleach and vinegar will clear away any soap scum, mineral deposits, or bacteria that remained in the tub and hoses. Complete this process once or twice a year to ensure the washing machine produces fresh smelling laundry every time.
Most modern washing machines feature two dispensers - one for bleach and one for fabric softener. They each should be cleaned once a month to avoid unnecessary cleaning later on. If your washing machine features removable dispensers, cleaning them is as simple as scrubbing them in the sink and allowing them to dry. Some homeowners make the mistake of putting the dispensers into their dishwasher; this is not recommended because it can cause bleach and fabric softener residue to fall on the dishes, making you to rewash the entire load.
