Spray guns are used for a variety of painting, such as automobile body work. A spray gun allows you to complete a paint job quick and easy manner. They can help you get professional looking results at a fraction of the price you would have to pay for someone else to do it for you. The key to keeping a spray gun in good working order is proper cleaning. The following guide can be helpful to individuals who are using their spray gun for the first time and have no idea how to clean it when they are finished.

The first step of cleaning your spray gun is emptying the contents. If you have any paint left from the project you were working of it, dispose of it immediately. Next fill the now-empty paint pot halfway with solvent. There are many cleaning solvents on the market so using the right one for the type of paint you were using is essential to properly cleaning your spray gun. If you are not sure what type of paint it was, start with lacquer thinner. This is usually a good all-purpose option, but it may not be successful for all types of paint.

Give the cup a little shake to make sure the solvent coated the entire surface and then empty it again. If your paint pot has a siphon, you must remove the both holding it in place to clean the siphon hose. Now refill the paint pot with solvent and attach it to the spray gun. In a well ventilated area, or more preferably outside, spray the entire contents of solvent through the gun. You should do this at least a full minute. If you run out of solvent before that, add more. After this, make sure you wipe off the hoses and gaskets of the spray gun.

Now remove the following pieces: air cap, control knob spring, fluid nozzle, fluid needle, and fluid control knob. Place them in the paint pot and add enough solvent to cover them. You have two choices when it comes to clean these parts. If you will be using the gun in the very near future, such as in just a few hours, place the cap on the pot and leave them until you are ready to paint again. If you are done with the spray gun for the day, clean them off with the solvent in the pot and air dry them. Once they are dry, you can reassemble the gun and put it away.

Remember, you must always clean your spray gun after every use. If you fail to do so, be prepared to buy a new gun before starting another project. When left to sit, the paint dries and becomes harder to remove. Eventually, cleaning will become impossible so do not procrastinate - clean your spray gun as soon as you have finished painting.
