In most households, the washer and dryer are vital to keep the family functioning. With the average family of four drying three loads a week, the clothes dryer vents can quickly get clogged. This may not seem like a serious issue, but the buildup of dust, lint, and debris in your clothes dryer vents should not be taken lightly. Plugged vents cause almost 16,000 fires a year in America. Below are the necessary steps to clean your clothes dryer vents and prevent a fire hazard from developing.

The first step you need to take is to unplug your clothes dryer. You must disconnect it from both electric and gas power supplies; if you have a gas clothes dryer, be sure to shut off the gas first. The next step is to pull the machine away from the wall, but only about two feet. You do not want to pull the vent loose. Now that you can get behind the clothes dryer, you need to unscrew the 4-inch vent clamp on the back of the appliance. A screwdriver or nut driver will come in handy for this part.

After removing the screws, slide the vent of the clothes dryer. Now you can see all the lint and other buildup that has accumulated over time. You can remove it by hand, but a vacuum with a hose does a fantastic job of cleaning up the mess while limiting the amount of dust released into the air. Once the back of the clothes dryer is cleaned, turn your attention to the vent tubing you disconnected earlier. Remove the other side from the wall.

Most lint builds up with a foot of the ends, but the middle should be checked as well. If your arm or vacuum hose cannot reach the clog, you can use either a plumbing snake or coat hanger to pull it forward. With either of these options, take your time and be careful because the sharp ends can put holes in the tubing and cause leaks. Once you are finished removing all the dirt from the clothes dryer vent, reattach the tubing to both the wall and the dryer. Push the appliance back in place and continue with your normal laundry routine.

Your clothes dryer vents should be cleaned on a regular basis, but how often really depends on how often you use the appliance. There are a few signs you can look out for. Does your clothes dryer take more than a hour to dry a load of towels? Are your clothes still damp after completing a full cycle? Have birds and other animals entering your home through the outside vent? If your answer is "yes" to any of these questions, you should make the time to clean your clothes dryer vent.
