How to build a dog house using a cordless drill

A cordless drill for this project and many other household projects is an invaluable tool. There are not many tools that are more useful when working on projects around the house.

The amount of wood you will need for this project depends on the size of your dog house. Once you decide on the dimensions you will be able to determine the amount of would you will need by using your measurements. Remember that you want plenty of support on the floor as this will be holding all of the weight.

The floor is the base, measure and cut the perimeter and put the square together using your cordless drill and some 3 inch screws. A speed Square can be used to keep it square. The next step is to cut the supports for the floor. Two by Four pressure treated lumber is sufficient for this job. Attach support boards at equal distance from the sides in most cases two should be plenty, one if it is a small dog house. The last step for the floor will be to cut a piece of three quarter inch plywood the same size as the base and attach with one and a half inch screws.

Now it's time to build the walls. These can be built on the ground and then attached to the base. Building the walls can be done in much the same manner as the base, the only difference being that the sides will slope from taller at the front to shorter at the back and the back will be shorter than the front in order to allow the roof to slant to the back. To make an opening for the door in the front the two support boards can be set at the desired width of the door opening. The horizontal support is placed at the height of the door. The front and the back frames need to be shorter to fit in-between the wall frames. Attach the walls to the base and at all four corners to each other with 3 inch screws.

Now you're ready to cut the plywood for the sides which can be half inch or � inch. When doing this, remember to cut the front and back pieces wider on each side by the thickness of your plywood so that it will overlap creating a nice clean finished look.

The finishing touch will be the roof. When cutting the roof remember to make it hang over on either side by three or four inches. You will need to finish the roof using tar paper and some kind of shingle or tin. I finished mine with tin, it's a much easier option and since the roof of my house is tin, it matches nicely.
