The General Electric name has been around for almost a hundred years because the company has built machines that have stood the test of time. The manufacturer was made on the fact that the consumer needed home products that could be reliable for years and the company listened and for decades General Electric has delivered. The company offers everything from kitchen appliances to washers and dryers to smaller items like radios. Every year the company continues to expand its reach on the mechanical world and it does not look like it will end any time soon because the quality of products continue to be very well built.
If you are one of the lucky consumers to have owned or are now in the process of owning a GE oven right now then you will know that they are very nice appliances to have around. They are very durable and there are some ovens that were built 30 or 40 years ago that are still operating today if they are properly taken care of. As with every appliance, there comes a time where repairs may be needed. These repairs may range from minor like changing a light bulb to something more major like changing thermostats. No matter what the repair is, you should always feel comfortable with doing the repair first before starting or should not start at all. Also, having the right part is important or you will be wasting time, energy and money. Below are a few pointers to follow in case you are thinking of doing the repairs yourself.
If your oven will not operate period, then check the fuse box because that may be the most likely issue. There also may be an element that may be burnt out. If your oven has a clock and it isn't working, then you can go ahead and assume that there is no electricity getting to the appliance so check the breakers and see if that works.
Just because you did not solve the problem with the fuse box does not necessarily mean that you do not have a fuse issue. Some older ovens actually have a hidden set of fuses inside the oven which are under the top of the range so check this also.
Even if all of those areas check out, there is a slight possibility that your plug became dislodged somehow from the wall or there might be some damage to the wiring.
If your oven has power but will not get hot, then you will want to make sure that the broiler and oven elements are working properly. The oven element is what usually will go bad before all else so check that first. If it glows completely, then you are good to go, if not then you might need to replace it. Do the same thing for the broiler element.
Sometimes the thermostat goes bad but this is always best to leave for a professional but you can see if that is the problem by yourself. You can buy an oven thermometer and place it in the oven and set the oven at a certain temperature and if it is off by more than 40 degrees then it is time for a new thermostat.
