If you own a refrigerator, you might have had an issue with the door of the fridge or freeze having a gasket issue. Sometimes these gaskets can just grow old after a certain number of years or just get worn out after constant opening and closing. It is not uncommon for these types of things to happen and despite what you may think changing one is not hard at all and usually takes a matter of minutes- an hour at most. Many manufacturers offer replacement gaskets inside new appliances when you buy them because they know how fast they can wear out. Hardware and department stores also carry replacement parts at very affordable prices for your convenience. There are not many people who are unable to replace this kind of part because they are so easy to remove and apply. Below are the simple steps in removing and replacing your freezer door gasket:
You want to make sure that you purchase the gasket that fits the model of the freezer/ refrigerator you own. There are "one size fits all" gaskets but these can be hard work so it is best just to get the right one the first time. You can always take a section of the gasket to the hardware store and match it up so that you get the right one.
Always acclimate the gasket with the temperature of the freezer before putting it on.
Take the old gasket off the freezer door which are usually screwed on or glued on. There are some models where the freezer door may have held parts of the gasket in place so be cautious of that.
Go ahead and remove the rest of the fasteners on each side of the freezer door until all of them are gone. Try not to remove the freezer door panel. There is a chance that the gasket is being held in place by spring-type clips so try be careful when prying because you could end up spending more money for clips. If there is adhesive in place, try scraping it off with a putty knife if you have one.
Make sure that once you have the old gasket off, you clean the area with warm soapy water.
You can begin putting on the new gasket one section at a time but it is best to start at the top part of the freezer door. Make sure you are smoothing the gasket out as much and evenly as humanly possibly. You will need gasket cement which may come with the gasket or you may need to buy it separately. The gasket cannot have any lumps and it must lay flat or you are defeating the whole purpose of replacing the gasket.
Put all fasteners, strips or any other parts that held the gasket back on. Once the gasket is firmly in its place, make sure you loosen or tighten any bolts to make sure the gasket is firmly in place.
