For the love of dishwashers

When I was loading my dishwasher the other day, I was musing on the criteria I have when it s time for a new dishwasher. For example, I really wish our dishwasher was quieter, because when we entertain friends and do the dishes in between dinner and dessert, our dishwasher sloshes and clanks like an old tired robot. I would also consider installing a new dishwasher level with my gaze, so I wouldn t have to bend over to get the dishes out.

Dishwasher parts that I d like to see included in a new dishwasher are an additional arm to spray water, and the ability to spray with more force, because I m tired of scraping off plates to avoid food getting stuck in other dishwasher parts. Another dishwasher part would be the placement of a trap to catch food bits that get loaded into the dishwasher along with the dishes.

One dishwasher part that I appreciate on our current dishwasher is the ability to set a timer so the dishwasher starts in an hour or two or three. If I don t have to have clean dishes right away, I can set it to start once I am in bed or watching tv. This also lets me do my part for mother nature, when I use electricity during non-peak times for electricity use.

It seems like I have seen a dishwasher that had moveable racks and baskets so you could configure it as you needed it, day by day. These dishwasher parts would allow me to wash a bunch of large cooking pots one day, and six or eight full place settings of my grandmother s china the next day, with neither the dishwasher or the china any worse for wear.

Dishwasher parts are getting more and more specific and useful over the years, I remember loading and unloading one of the first dishwashers, first rolling it into the middle of the kitchen and hooking it up to the kitchen faucet. It was a splendid alternative to washing dishes by hand, even if it was a primitive process compared to today s sophisticated standards.

I believe dishwasher parts like racks and baskets should always have the wire completely covered with a thick layer of plastic. If the plastic is accidently torn or the wire exposed somehow, it can result in rust stains, not so much a problem for pots and pans but a real downer when I find stains on china or casual table ware.

Dishwashers are a wonderful invention and I appreciate the designers who are working hard, even now, to make the next great break through in home appliances. An automatic window washer would be nice, I think. What about you?
