The first step is making sure that you have power. This can be as easy as checking the power cords to checking the plugs itself. Make sure that the actual unit is switched in the on position. This may seem like an easy thing to never miss, but people do miss it. Check the entrance panel of the dishwasher to see if there is a fuse that has been blown. You can also check your circuit breaker to see if it has been tripped.

If your dishwasher does have power but you are still having power issues, the switch itself may be at fault. You can check this by using a voltage meter. Take off the plate and put one probe on one section of the outlet and the other probe on the other section. If the voltage meter shows power, then the switch is okay however if it does not then you have found your problem.

Sometimes the most simple of things could be the problem. Check the door to actually make sure it is closed the right way and the latch is secured properly.

Check the control panel to ensure that the controls are set the right way. On newer models, the controls are much more sensitive.
